{"id":663545,"date":"2026-03-18T03:51:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T03:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/663545\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T03:51:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T03:51:10","slug":"wastewater-discharge-reported-at-jbphh-uv-treated-water-released-offshore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/663545\/","title":{"rendered":"Wastewater discharge reported at JBPHH, UV-treated water released offshore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; A wastewater discharge was reported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following recent heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">JBPHH said the base\u2019s Wastewater Treatment Plant experienced a bypass of the sand filter from 4 p.m. Friday, March 13, through 10:15 a.m. Monday, March 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">More than five million gallons of partially treated wastewater were discharged through the plant\u2019s offshore outfall into Mamala Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials said the wastewater was still disinfected using UV treatment before being released. The outfall extends about 1.5 miles offshore to a diffuser located roughly 150 feet below the ocean surface, where it is mixed with surrounding waters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the Navy, similar past incidents involving UV-treated wastewater have shown bacteria levels remained below permitted limits, with no additional environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The treatment plant uses an enhanced secondary treatment system with four steps: clarifiers, activated sludge, sand filtration and UV disinfection. During this bypass, the wastewater skipped the sand filtration step but still underwent UV disinfection before discharge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Navy has notified the State Department of Health as required by the WWTP\u2019s operating permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
