But in a new interview, he\u2019s speaking out for the first time in years on his rocky but loving relationship with Winehouse, and why he feels he should not shoulder the responsibility of her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMy stance now is that I know a lot of people, especially people reading media 20 years ago, would have an idea that Amy\u2019s passing is my responsibility. As I\u2019ve always said, I never shirk from any responsibility. If I\u2019ve done something, I\u2019ll put my hand up to it,\u201d he said on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2v5uaXsbe2c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:We Need to Talk;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;We Need to Talk&quot;}\" class=\"link \">We Need to Talk<\/a> podcast on Tuesday, March 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fielder-Civil said that while he\u2019s \u201cmade peace\u201d with the fact that he \u201chad a part to play\u201d in the British star\u2019s death, it\u2019s unfair to place the blame entirely on him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAmy herself had agency. And that is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd even though the drinking had started to hurt her, she carried on\u2026 She\u2019s actually a very strong woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the wide-ranging interview, Fielder-Civil recalled meeting Winehouse at a pub in London circa 2001, and how he thought she was a \u201cbeautiful woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When they met, neither were big into drugs, though they broke up for the first time after Winehouse\u2019s drinking got to be \u201ca bit much,\u201d he said. Their on-again, off-again relationship inspired her breakthrough 2006 album <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/amy-winehouse-back-to-black-video-1-billion-views-youtube-8348193\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Back to Black;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Back to Black&quot;}\" class=\"link \">Back to Black<\/a>, and in 2007, they were married in Miami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese are memories which are hard for me to revisit. It\u2019s hard for me, \u2018cause she\u2019s not here still. That was my best mate, and we were happy. And the drugs was a side of it, eventually,\u201d he said. \u201c[But] our love had nothing to do with addiction. And addiction had nothing to do with our love. That\u2019s where it went. It wasn\u2019t who we were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fielder-Civil insisted in the interview that he was not an addict when he met Winehouse, and said he knows \u201cfor a fact\u201d that the pair became drug addicts together.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-CivilCredit: Shirlaine Forrest\/WireImage\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/8ef28631f2e54e989ef25ad6de1fbe9f.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil<br \/>Credit: Shirlaine Forrest\/WireImage<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He cited the fact that Winehouse\u2019s drug addiction was actually at its worst when Fielder-Civil was in jail for a bar fight. Still, he did admit to being the one to introduce her to heroin, though Winehouse had allegedly \u201cexperimented\u201d with other drugs on her own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI never blamed a person that gave me drugs for the first time. I\u2019ve never tried to put that on anyone. Why would I?\u201d he said. \u201cI never understood, do these people think that I forced Amy to do drugs? That\u2019s just not what happened\u2026 I\u2019m not shirking responsibility, but this idea of daily facilitating, no. I wasn\u2019t the dealer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Winehouse and Fielder-Civil divorced in 2009, though they remained in each other\u2019s lives. When she died of accidental alcohol poisoning in 2011 \u2014 without any drugs in her system \u2014 Fielder-Civil was behind bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He said on the podcast that they talked regularly during his incarceration, and he had been worried about her in recent months after a number of increasingly alarming incidents, such as Winehouse falling asleep on her front doorstep. He told podcast host Paul C. I\u2019d say, \u2018Please let Amy stay alive until I get out.\u2019 \u2018Cause I had this massive fear, like an absolute control fear, something\u2019s going to happen to her and I\u2019m in here and I\u2019m not able to do anything or help or even be there,\u201d he recalled. \u201cMy first thought was, \u2018This is my worst nightmare. It\u2019s not true.\u2019&#8230; My head was swimming straightaway\u2026 I burst into tears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fielder-Civil was unable to attend Winehouse\u2019s funeral because of his sentence. He said that it took him a long time to grapple with the fact that he had not only lost his \u201cbest mate,\u201d but was also being blamed for her death while mourning alone in jail and being \u201costracized\u201d in the press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019m never, ever here to say, \u2018Amy was bad.\u2019 But I know Amy wouldn\u2019t want me to still be sat here 20 years later saying it was all my fault,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019d be saying, \u2018Get it right, babe. Come on. Tell them the truth.\u2019 We were just young addicts at the time.
