Urgency to close the gap for all babies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As a first-time mother, Whitney Fordham was worried when she learned she was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was scared about pregnancy; to be honest, I never wanted kids. I was never maternal,&#8221; the proud Cullunghutti, Jerrinja, Wandi Wandandian woman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was a big lifestyle shift that she was unsure she could adjust to, along with managing her fear of needles and medical interventions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Everyone tells you about the sleepless nights and the massive toll it has on your body and all of the scary things that can happen,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mum and bub smiling together\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cf7942640a78f80f979c119c9777f787.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Whitney is enjoying spending time with her six-month-old son.\u00a0 (ABC: Adam Wyatt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Compounding Ms Fordham&#8217;s fears, was the news that she was a high-risk patient because of her BMI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Based on the south coast of New South Wales, she was told she would have to travel to a larger hospital, away from family and the regional hospital she hoped to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I totally understood it, but \u2026 for that opportunity to be taken away from me, it hurt,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;BMI is just numbers on a bit of paper, and doesn&#8217;t define who I am.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Midwife looks at baby\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/475243a9f30cf254274d80eb9b0b8dea.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Midwife Rosie (left) checks Mikaere&#8217;s weight.\u00a0 (ABC: Adam Wyatt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Supported by Waminda, a local Aboriginal health service, Ms Fordham and her midwife Rosie Downing attended high-risk appointments together that resulted in the delivery of baby Mikaere at the local hospital, through their Birthing on Country program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s embedded in our culture, birthing our babies on country, naturally, and [it&#8217;s] just like a place of belonging for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Giving birth was a surprising experience for Ms Fordham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I loved it right up until I was due and would be pregnant all over again,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Baby on the scales\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/b2104527092fd595242b48b001e6a62a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mikaere is a happy and healthy baby. (ABC: Adam Wyatt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mikaere came three weeks early but was born at a healthy birth weight \u2014 which is between 2.5 kilograms and nearly 4.5kgs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Visiting the clinic for a check-up, Ms Downing said he was &#8220;thriving&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, he was 2.92kg when he was born, which at 37 weeks is a beautiful healthy birth weight,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He&#8217;s growing so well. It&#8217;s so nice to see him so healthy, thriving and strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, not all First Nations babies are meeting this benchmark.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graphic of baby weights\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4ecae5068b042b6f8f21e9c376bc7c26.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The percentage of Indigenous babies born healthy is similar to 2017.\u00a0 (ABC\/ Productivity Commission)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the latest Closing the Gap data released by the Productivity Commission today, only 88.9 per cent of Indigenous babies were born at healthy weight across the country, compared to 93.9 per cent of non-Indigenous babies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The goal is to get 91 per cent of babies born at a healthy weight in just five years&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<p>Factors behind low birth weight<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Birth weights can have significant impact on a child&#8217;s life according to Yvette Roe, from the Molly Wardaguga Institute for First Nations Birth Rights at Charles Darwin University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like starting a race and you&#8217;re behind the start line,&#8221; Dr Roe said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-07-23\/closing-the-gap-for-first-nations-kids-in-early-education\/104126778\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is the gap closing for Indigenous kids?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Liam and Nicole want their children to have the education they didn&#8217;t. How focusing on the early years impacts a child&#8217;s future trajectory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So babies are small, they&#8217;re sick, that means their lungs might not be developed, their brains are not at full capacity \u2026 they are susceptible to illness&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Weight at birth under 2.5kg is more common than above 4.5kg in the Indigenous population. Evidence shows low weight can increase the risk of infant mortality and as children age, health implications can include chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A range of factors contributing to low birth weight can include smoking, a mother who is underweight, living with health conditions such as diabetes or low attendance at antenatal appointments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Access to good antenatal care can sometimes come down to lack of regional maternal services and food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Baby feet and baby lying on a weighing machine. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A recent study among First Nations women who used the Waminda service found they had significantly more normal vaginal births, were more likely to be exclusively breastfeeding after leaving hospital and had greater engagement with culturally safe wellbeing programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Another study of the Birthing in Our Community program in Queensland found mothers were less likely to have a preterm birth (before 37 weeks) and it reduced the removals of newborn babies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Yvette Roe, a Njikena Jawuru woman who was one of the authors of the studies said with tailored supports designed by community there are positive outcomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What we often see is the system failure where mum falls out of the system and she&#8217;s not getting the timely and the critical support she needs during this time,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We need to reconfigure the system [so] that it is mum and bub centred, but also it&#8217;s resourced appropriately from the primary healthcare sector to the hospital sector.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The importance of reaching healthy birth weight<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up of a cute baby hand\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/9716cd8f95afed99aaad2410990fe926.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Giving birth to babies over 2.5kg helps improve health outcomes.\u00a0 (ABC: Adam Wyatt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Northern Territory and Western Australia recorded the lowest percentages \u2014 85.6 per cent and 86.3 per cent of babies born a healthy weight respectively. WA was the only state worsening and not on track to be met by 2031.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In Perth, Rhonda Marriott, the inaugural Pro Vice Chancellor, Ngangk Yira Institute for Change at Murdoch University and a former midwife, said the data shows that the &#8220;systems are failing mums&#8221; by not providing appropriate care where they live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If we look at remote services then quite often they&#8217;re fly in and fly out. So you&#8217;ve got no continuity of care,&#8221; the Nyikina academic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have maternity services that are providing the full care, antenatal service, labour and postnatal. (Supplied: Murdoch University)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This year the federal government announced another $44.4 million in funding for ten Birthing on Country services with 75 per cent of the funding committed to Aboriginal Community Controlled Services and the rest to university projects working in collaboration with First Nations communities and services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Waminda is one of those services, but Dr Roe said, while this is a good start it is &#8220;just the tip of the iceberg&#8221; for what is needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Rhonda Marriott agrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That&#8217;s like a drop in the bucket when you think of the size of Western Australia and the size of Queensland. You know, it doesn&#8217;t even touch the sides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Selwyn sits on the steps looking at camera. And in order for us to look at accelerating growth across the targets, we need to do more of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Little progress on Closing the Gap<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On Wednesday night the Productivity Commission updated six out of 19 targets with new data, which show if the government is on track to meet the 2031 deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Out of the six updated, the rate of suicide continues to worsen, which is at the highest rate since 2017, and the number of adults imprisoned has also increased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Land and sea rights continue to show good improvement and are on track.
