{"id":664750,"date":"2026-03-18T15:51:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T15:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/664750\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T15:51:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T15:51:09","slug":"pla-holds-dedication-ceremony-for-point-loma-gateway-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/664750\/","title":{"rendered":"PLA holds dedication ceremony for Point Loma Gateway Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>POINT LOMA \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pointloma.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Point Loma Association<\/a> celebrated the completion of the new Point Loma Gateway Sign in style, with speeches, a ribbon cutting, and a slideshow capped off by a champagne toast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony,\u201d said Beth Roach, board chair of the PLA, which she noted is an all-volunteer, nonprofit group dedicated to keeping the Peninsula beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor 65 years, our volunteers have made a difference in the community. We\u2019re inspired today by those who came before us. And we hope this sign will inspire a future generation to become caretakers of the Peninsula by volunteering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PLA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2005002190119351\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dedication ceremony<\/a> on March 10 for the community\u2019s new milestone marker was attended by Mayor Todd Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>The event about the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/life\/2025\/12\/08\/point-loma-association-erects-sign-rosecrans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three-year project<\/a> included a slideshow highlighting the sign\u2019s history and development. The event was held in front of a 20-inch replica of the community\u2019s new signature gateway monument sign, now on sale through the PLA.<\/p>\n<p>High-profile Peninsula philanthropist Dorothea \u201cDottie\u201d Laub was saluted at the ceremony for her ongoing contributions to the Point Loma community and for helping make the new gateway sign possible. \u201cWithout your generosity, Dottie, this sign would not be completed \u2014 there would be no gateway sign,\u201d said Roach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe city of San Diego is a city of villages, and each neighborhood has its own unique vibe and personality, and most of those neighborhoods have their own gateway sign,\u201d said past PLA board member J.T. Barr, president of Schmidt Design Landscape Architects in Point Loma, who led the volunteer committee spearheading the project. \u201cWell, now we have ours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barr summed up the work done to create Point Loma\u2019s new gateway sign as a legacy. \u201cThe work of the PLA continues to honor our rich history, and our community always has an eye toward the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor saluted the community and the PLA for the nonprofit\u2019s ongoing contributions to Point Loma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to be here because I had one sole responsibility, which is to simply convey the appreciation, the gratitude, and the respect of the city of San Diego to the PLA for delivering this treasured gift in our public right-of-way to highlight one of our most historic communities,\u201d said Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria pointed out that community gateway signs are difficult to do today because sometimes the new signs don\u2019t quite hit the mark.<\/p>\n<p>Identified\u00a0early as a community priority, the\u00a0approximately 29-foot-tall, 22-foot-wide Point Loma Gateway Sign, supported by an 8.5-foot-deep foundation, serves as an illuminated landmark welcoming residents and visitors into the Point Loma community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bringing the\u00a0sign to life\u00a0required\u00a0years of planning and collaboration between volunteers and project partners.\u00a0Design development spanned several years, followed by an 18-month to two-year formal design phase.\u00a0After final approvals were granted in mid-September 2025, construction and installation were completed within a few months.<\/p>\n<p> Since its installation, the Gateway Sign has received an enthusiastic response from residents, businesses, and visitors, quickly becoming a new landmark for Point Loma.
