{"id":665330,"date":"2026-03-18T21:33:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T21:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/665330\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T21:33:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T21:33:15","slug":"psychedelics-may-be-no-better-than-antidepressants-for-depression-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/665330\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychedelics may be no better than antidepressants for depression: studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Prescriptions for psychedelic drugs and cannabis are on the rise in Australia, particularly for treatment of mental health disorders like depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But experts are urging caution, after three new studies have found scant evidence they can help to treat these conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Two studies published in JAMA Psychiatry today investigated the effectiveness of psychedelics compared to traditional antidepressants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1001\/jamapsychiatry.2025.4809\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first study<\/a>, which reviewed clinical trials that looked at LSD, psilocybin, peyote and ayahuasca, concluded these performed no better than traditional antidepressants for treating depression.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A small brown mushroom sprouts from dark green grass.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/6cf54132ed797bf9a2b1c622ef9f12f6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The trial found inconclusive long-term effects from testing psilocybin for depression, and some small risks from taking the drug. (ABC South West: Roxanne Taylor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Results from the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1001\/jamapsychiatry.2026.0132\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second study<\/a>, which trialled psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, was inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The studies come after another study published in <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S2215-0366(26)00015-5\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Lancet<\/a> this week found there was no evidence from 54 clinical trials that cannabis and cannabinoids were effective treatments for depression, anxiety, or PTSD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jack Wilson, lead author of the cannabis study and a research fellow at the University of Sydney, said that the lack of evidence did not mean the treatments had no potential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But when we have access to medicines, we want to make sure that they&#8217;re safe and effective, and we want to make sure that there&#8217;s adequate evidence for them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The absence of evidence here really does not justify the widespread use of these medicines.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Challenges studying cannabinoids and psychedelics<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The &#8220;gold standard&#8221; in medical research is a double-blind clinical trial, where participants don&#8217;t know whether they&#8217;re receiving a treatment or a placebo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But cannabinoids and psychedelic drugs are difficult to study because they can&#8217;t easily be substituted for placebos, according to Dr Wilson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Participants usually know what they&#8217;re taking. So this can influence the results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-11-30\/psychedelic-drug-mental-health-treatment-tga-confusion\/103154756\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psychedelic mental illness treatment in state of confusion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mental health advocates call for their concerns about the upcoming use of psychedelic drugs MDMA and psilocybin to treat mental illness to be urgently addressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">To compare like for like, the authors of first JAMA Psychiatry study examined all publicly available clinical trials on psychedelics and depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Then they compared these trials only with antidepressant trials where participants knew what they were being prescribed so everyone was aware of what they were taking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sam Moreton, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Wollongong, said it was not surprising the psychedelics did not outperform antidepressants.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The hype around psychedelic therapy has consistently run ahead of what the evidence actually supports,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Dr Moreton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There are good theoretical reasons to think psychedelic-assisted therapy could help with depression and other mental health conditions, and I think it\u2019s absolutely worth researching properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But the field has serious methodological problems that have been well documented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-07-25\/psychedelic-therapy-mind-medicine-australia-four-corners\/101210326\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psychedelic therapy&#8217;s &#8216;slippery slope from hope to hype&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Inside the underground world of psychedelic therapy and the controversial charity pushing hard to bring the treatment into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the second JAMA Psychiatry study was &#8220;methodologically careful&#8221;, using a low dose of psilocybin as a control, as well as a full dose and a placebo, to try and keep patients ignorant of which treatment they were receiving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But 86 per cent of participants could still accurately guess which group they belonged to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Wilson said more research, such as the trial published in JAMA Psychiatry, was important for understanding the effects of these treatments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The TGA <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-02-03\/tga-approves-psilocybin-mdma-for-treating-depression-ptsd\/101929578\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rescheduled psilocybin and MDMA in 2023<\/a>, making it easier for patients to access the drugs as medicines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think we should be very wary of psychedelic-assisted therapies going down the same path as medicinal cannabis,&#8221; Professor Rossell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve had a couple of people come through our programs and actually relapsed. So I guess we could say that we&#8217;ve made them worse, which is awful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She predicted that research that included thorough psychotherapy alongside psychedelics would produce more evidence in their favour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While she supported psychedelics as a potential therapy for depression, Professor Rossell said the treatments needed to be approached with caution and after other treatments had failed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;There are safety issues, whichever intervention that you take on board. And there are some very tried and tested interventions already existing for a lot of mental health conditions,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The reason why we&#8217;re working on these experimental interventions is because there are people that are not getting better with what we&#8217;ve got, but this is should certainly never be a person&#8217;s first foray into a mental health intervention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cannabis prescriptions for depression lack evidence<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Medicinal cannabis was first legalised in Australia in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Medicinal cannabis originally had many hoops to jump through, like psychedelic-assisted therapies do in Australia now.
