In a series of voice memos sent to fans on Wednesday (March 18), the New Zealand singer revealed the deal she first signed with Universal Music Group when she was 12 years old ended in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI adore them, they\u2019re incredible people, and I have had an amazing experience with them,\u201d she says about her time with UMG. \u201cBut the truth is that a 12-year-old girl pre-signed and pre-sold her creative output before she knew what it would be like and before she knew what she was signing away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorde goes on to state that she\u2019ll likely sign a deal again some time in the future\u2014which \u201ccould well be with Universal\u201d\u2014but that she \u201cneeded to take a second to have nothing being bought or sold that comes from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I see an opportunity for a clean slate I take it,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd it does feel different. It sounds like it wouldn\u2019t but it really does. I feel a feeling of openness and possibility and am inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorde spends the rest of her memos talking about what she\u2019s been up to of late, including reading \u201cbizarre fucking books\u201d and playing chess with Addison Rae.
