Plus, when to avoid coconut water.<\/p>\n<p>Health benefits of coconut water<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Coconut water is most well-known for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/a21085214\/what-are-electrolytes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/fitness\/a21085214\/what-are-electrolytes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"electrolytes\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">electrolytes<\/a> (which we\u2019ll go over later), but that\u2019s not its only asset:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s ultra-hydrating<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Like regular water, coconut water\u2019s main benefit is hydration, says Keri Gans, M.S., R.D., registered dietitian and author of The Small Change Diet. \u201cHydration helps keep our joints lubricated, delivers nutrients to our cells, and regulates our body temperature.\u201d Due to sweating and electrolyte loss during exercise, coconut water may be beneficial for rehydration after exercise; however, its sodium content is lower than that of a sports drink, so it may not be as efficient, she points out.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Drinking enough water on a daily basis is one of the best things you can do for your health. In fact, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/health\/essential-nutrients\/water\/how-much-water-do-you-need\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/health\/essential-nutrients\/water\/how-much-water-do-you-need\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a> recommends that women and men drink about nine and 13 cups per day, respectively, says <a href=\"https:\/\/meganmeyerphd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/meganmeyerphd.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Megan Meyer, Ph.D.\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Megan Meyer, Ph.D.<\/a>, a nutrition, immunology, and science communication expert. \u201cCoconut water can help people meet their hydration needs, since it is about 95% water,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s plentiful in key nutrients<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cDepending on the brand, 8 oz of store-bought coconut water has around 500 milligrams (mg) of potassium, 30 to 40 mg of sodium, and 4% of the recommended daily value for magnesium and calcium,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joanna-gregg-rd-874a506a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joanna-gregg-rd-874a506a\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Joanna Gregg, R.D.\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Joanna Gregg, R.D.<\/a>, a MyFitnessPal registered dietitian. \u201cIf your diet is lacking in any of these nutrients, coconut water may be beneficial for reaching your daily needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a natural source of electrolytes<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Electrolytes are minerals not found in water that help maintain various important bodily functions, including hydration, muscle function, and a balanced blood pH, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002350.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002350.htm\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Library of Medicine\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>. However, it will never be as good for losing weight as plain ol\u2019 water.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cSubstituting high-calorie beverages with coconut water can be a healthier choice for individuals looking to manage their weight,\u201d says Olszewski. \u201cHowever, some packaged coconut water products may contain added sugars and higher calorie content, which may not be conducive to weight loss. It\u2019s crucial to read labels and opt for pure, unsweetened coconut water when possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It can be a powerful antioxidant<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cCoconut water contains antioxidants that may help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body and protect cells from oxidative stress,\u201d explains Olszewski. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22449517\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22449517\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Animal-based studies\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Animal-based studies<\/a> have explored this theory with positive results, but more research is warranted in humans to determine how powerful its preventive effects really are.<\/p>\n<p>Nutritional breakdown of coconut water<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Coconut water <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6255029\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6255029\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"contains\" data-node-id=\"25.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contains<\/a> 94% water and very little fat. It should not be confused with coconut milk, which is made by adding water to grated coconut meat. Coconut milk contains about 50% water and is quite high in fat.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Coconut water is low in calories, provides vitamin C, and many electrolytes, including potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium, says Gans. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1535241\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1535241\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/a>, one cup (240 ml) contains 60 calories, as well as:<\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-kw9lqy emevuu60\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.0\">Carbs: 15 g<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.1\">Sugar: 8 g<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.2\">Calcium: 4% of the daily value (DV)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.3\">Magnesium: 4% of the DV<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.4\">Phosphorus: 2% of the DV<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\" data-node-id=\"27.5\">Potassium: 15% of the DV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Should anyone avoid drinking coconut water?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Coconut water\u2019s naturally high potassium content may be beneficial for some, but others should proceed with caution, according to Melissa Prest, D.C.N., R.D.N., a spokesperson for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics\" data-node-id=\"29.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<\/a>. \u201cFor example, individuals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/g65255828\/subtle-kidney-disease-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/g65255828\/subtle-kidney-disease-symptoms\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"chronic kidney disease\" data-node-id=\"29.3\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chronic kidney disease<\/a> are often advised to monitor or limit potassium intake because their kidneys may not efficiently remove excess potassium,\u201d she explains. \u201cPeople taking certain potassium-retaining medications, such as some blood pressure medications, may also need to be mindful of potassium intake. In these situations, it\u2019s best to discuss the appropriate amount of potassium with your physician, pharmacist, or registered dietitian nutritionist.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Can I drink coconut water every day?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Drinking coconut water daily may be a part of a healthy diet, especially for those who live in especially hot climates and work out a lot, says Olszewski. However, as with any major change to your diet, it\u2019s recommended you consult your doctor before adding coconut water to your daily routine, especially if you have specific health conditions like kidney disease or take certain medications.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Prest also warns against consuming large amounts of coconut water as it may cause some to experience bloating or mild stomach upset. \u201cAnother consideration is food safety. Fresh or unpasteurized coconut water can support the growth of foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes,\u201d she says. So if you do drink coconut water daily, \u201cchoosing pasteurized products or properly handled fresh coconut water can reduce that risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">At the end of the day, regular water is probably still your best bet for hydration, says Gans.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the best way to consume coconut water?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The simplest way is to pour it into a glass, drink it, and enjoy, says Gans. \u201cBecause of its mineral content, limit yourself to one to two cups daily.\u201d It can also be added to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/a20499756\/20-super-healthy-smoothie-recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/a20499756\/20-super-healthy-smoothie-recipes\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"smoothies\" data-node-id=\"35.1\" class=\"body-link css-1xnf0nh emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">smoothies<\/a> instead of regular water or juice, she suggests.
