Drew Goddard has been attached to write and direct<\/a> The Matrix 5 for several years, but we\u2019ve heard very little about the project during that time. Several weeks ago, he confirmed<\/a> that the fifth installment is still in the works, but he had a little more to say in a recent chat with Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t say too much, because we\u2019re still in the stage of writing it,\u201d Goddard told the outlet. \u201cI need to give myself space to find the best story. I think the approach will be the way I approach anything, which is, do I love it? And I love what Lana and Lilly Wachowski did with those movies. They mean so much to me and I feel like they\u2019ve had a profound impact on my creative voice. I take this responsibility very seriously. I feel the weight of wanting to do right by the fans, wanting to do right by the creators and wanting to do right for myself as a fan.\u201c<\/p>\n

Goddard has been busy with other projects, such as Project Hail Mary<\/a>, but it seems The Matrix 5 might be taking longer than expected to get right. We don\u2019t even know if this will be a fresh take on the story, or if Keanu Reeves and any other members of the original cast will return. In response to that very question, Goddard simply said, \u201cI can\u2019t speak to that.\u201c<\/p>\n

The Matrix Resurrections<\/p>\n

The long-awaited fourth film in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections<\/a>, was released in 2021, but unfortunately, it was a box office bomb and received mixed reviews. I\u2019ll give it some slack as it was released during the pandemic, but it\u2019s easy to see how fans were let down by the sequel. However, Goddard was a fan of the film and doesn\u2019t know why it didn\u2019t resonate as strongly as the other installments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he said. \u201cIt certainly resonated with me. When I watched the movie, I was deeply moved. It may be the most emotional of the of the four. I know it got caught up in the COVID times and it was when Warner Bros. was putting everything on streaming.\u201c<\/p>\n
