{"id":66973,"date":"2025-07-16T10:33:23","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T10:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/66973\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T10:33:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T10:33:23","slug":"senate-votes-to-advance-bill-to-rescind-funding-for-public-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/66973\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Votes To Advance Bill To Rescind Funding For Public Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/senate\/\" id=\"auto-tag_senate\" data-tag=\"senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate<\/a> voted on Tuesday evening to advance a package that would roll back $1.1 billion in funding to <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/pbs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_pbs\" data-tag=\"pbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PBS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/npr\/\" id=\"auto-tag_npr\" data-tag=\"npr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR<\/a> and public media that had already been allocated over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tVice President JD Vance had to break a tie, 51-50, to move the rescissions package to the floor. Three Republicans \u2014 Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) \u2014 joined with all Democrats and independents against it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tA final vote is expected in the next couple of days. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe cuts would zero out federal funding to the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/corporation-for-public-broadcasting\/\" id=\"auto-tag_corporation-for-public-broadcasting\" data-tag=\"corporation-for-public-broadcasting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corporation for Public Broadcasting<\/a>, the entity that Congress set up almost 60 years ago to distribute grants to public media outlets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTrump\u2019s White House sought out the package of rescissions, which also rolls back billions of dollars of funding for foreign aid and health programs. The bill package calls for clawing back more than $9 billion in total funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRepublicans have long sought to eliminate public media funding, but Trump and his allies have targeted programming for an alleged liberal bias.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOn the Senate floor, Murkowski said that if Republicans don\u2019t like a left-wing bias at NPR, \u201cwe can address that. That doesn\u2019t mean we need to gut the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBut another lawmaker who was on the fence, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD), said that he supported the package after the Trump administration said that it would find money to \u201ccontinue grants to tribal radio stations without interruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTrump has <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/donald-trump-threats-to-withhold-support-for-lawmakers-who-vote-against-effort-to-defund-pbs-npr-and-public-media-1236454700\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236454700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatened to withhold support or endorsement<\/a> for any lawmaker who voted against the package of cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCongress has until Friday to approve the package, or the funds will stay in the budget as is. The House approved the package in a 214-212 vote last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThis is in our view a misuse of taxpayer dollars,\u201d House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters earlier on Tuesday. \u201cThey\u2019re biased reporting, they\u2019re not objective. They pretend to be so, they have for a long time. And the people don\u2019t need to fund that.\u201d He also cited the change in the media landscape \u201cwith so many different areas for information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a floor speech, \u201cTens of millions of Americans rely on public broadcast for weather alerts, local news, keeping track of City Hall, educational programming, and so much more. This affects most badly rural America, including Native communities. And these cuts couldn\u2019t come at a worse time: the floods in Texas remind us that speedy alerts and up-to-the-minute forecasts can mean the difference between life and death. And for millions, public radio and local TV are sometimes the only way to stay up to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSchumer said that cuts were being made \u201cin the false guise of eliminating waste.
