{"id":670241,"date":"2026-03-20T23:50:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/670241\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T23:50:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T23:50:23","slug":"verge-select-creates-ontario-studio-by-interlocking-three-volumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/670241\/","title":{"rendered":"Verge Select creates Ontario studio by interlocking three volumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian design studio Verge Select has designed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studios\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studio<\/a> for painter\u00a0Janna Watson in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ontario\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario<\/a>, composed of three square volumes fused together to form a secluded forest retreat.<\/p>\n<p>The Grey County studio is located in the county of the same name in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/ontario\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario<\/a>, and, unlike a second, more urban studio operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jannawatson.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Watson,<\/a> provides a space that &#8220;slows time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307973 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1772\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Verge Select has completed a painter&#8217;s studio in Ontario<\/p>\n<p>Located in a forested glade, the structure is composed of three square volumes of varying size. They are slightly askew of one another and fuse where they meet.<\/p>\n<p>The entire studio is clad in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/weathering-steel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weathering steel<\/a>, which will patina over time and &#8220;allow the building to recede chromatically into the forest floor&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/vergeselect.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Verge Select<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307967 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Grey County studio\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The structure is clad in weathering steel<\/p>\n<p>Watson&#8217;s programmatic needs largely informed the distinct shape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The studio takes shape as three distinct yet connected outcrops each responding to Watson&#8217;s brief for service functions, a light-filled workspace, and a flexible zone for photography and rest,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307956 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Grey County studio by Verge Select\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>An elevated steel catwalk leads to an entrance<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The volumes nest around a central service core, opening outward through generous glazing that frames views of moss-covered stone and woodland canopy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the interior, two of the cubes are largely open-plan, while the other is separated by a wall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307969 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Grey Country studio for Janna Watson\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Another door leads into the forest<\/p>\n<p>Watson&#8217;s painting area sits in the middle volume, surrounded by wide-open glazing. On one side, the central space steps up into the lounge area, while the service wing is off to the other side.<\/p>\n<p>This service space includes a washing area tucked into a sharp corner, and also a bathroom shaped like a right triangle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307957 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Grey County studio\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The central volume is wide open and wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows<\/p>\n<p>Across a central corridor is the main entrance to the studio via a steel catwalk, while a door on the other side of the structure also leads outside.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two arrival sequences \u2013 one compressed and inward-facing, the other emerging from the forest via a steel catwalk \u2013 establish a rhythm of transition that echoes the artist&#8217;s working process,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2307960 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/grey-county-studio-janna-watson-ontario-verge-select_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Janna Watson studio\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A wash area is tucked into one corner<\/p>\n<p>The studio&#8217;s ceilings reach ten feet high at their tallest, and are lined with &#8220;a gallery-style lighting system&#8221; for Watson&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<p>The space also contains a wood-burning fireplace and reflective, contemporary lounge chairs by designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paoloferrari.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paolo Ferrari<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/07\/16\/cordero-pardee-vermont-barn-artist-studio-biomaterials\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cordero-pardee-barnard-barn-vermont-artist-studio-sq5-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Barnard Barn by Cordero Pardee\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Cordero Pardee juxtaposes &#8220;old and new material cultures&#8221; for Vermont barn conversion\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Here, observation, walking, and seasonal change become active components of the creative cycle,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>Verge Select is based in Thornbury, Ontario and was founded in 2009 by Michael Curtis.
