Gavin Newsom for sinking critical legislation that would help protect properties in the idyllic community 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peter Pettler, 83, told The California Post that he\u2019s seen the value of his sprawling 2,700-square-foot ranch-style home plummet in value from $2.5 million to just $515,000.<\/p>\n<p>He was once even offered a pathetic $5,000 for his four-bedroom, four-bathroom manor.<\/p>\n<p>Ritzy LA enclave suffers staggering wealth wipe out \u2014 as mansion owners slam Gavin Newsom. CA Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one would buy this home now,\u201d Pettler, who has called the neighborhood home for 37 years, said. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t get a loan or insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said an opportunistic couple once tried to purchase his home in Seaview at a 99.8% discount, offering just $5,000, a couple of years ago. <\/p>\n<p>The homeowner blamed Newsom for vetoing <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billStatusClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Assembly Bill 986<\/a>, which would have provided funding to address the ongoing disaster. <\/p>\n<p>Introduced in February 2025, the bill was authored by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (District 66). It proposed expanding the California Emergency Services Act to include landslides as conditions for declaring a state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>After a winter of heavy drenching, the Abalone Cove and Portuguese Bend landslides have picked up.<\/p>\n<p>Pete Pettler, a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes blames Newsom for failing to save his home from crumbling into the ocean. Pedro Colo for CA Post<\/p>\n<p>The bill would have sped up the government response to the landslides, but was vetoed by Newsom on October 1 last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major disaster,\u201d said Pettler. \u201cHe should have passed the bill. I wish he\u2019d done something to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Democrat, Rep. Ted Lieu, who represents the area in CA\u2019s 36th district, is also under fire, with residents fuming that he has \u201cdone absolutely nothing\u201d to save their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The cliff-side mansions on Marguerite Dr in Palos Verdes are on the verge of collapsing. CA Post<\/p>\n<p>Barba\u2019s property on Narcissa Drive, with chickens in the yard, is now without natural gas, and he has installed solar panels for electricity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 72-year-old \u2014 who won at the 81st Academy Awards for the film \u201cThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button\u201d in the Best Visual Effects category \u2014 blames authorities for not doing more to help residents. <\/p>\n<p>He said a FEMA plan to provide funds for the city to purchase damaged properties at 75% of their value is mired in red tape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey would scrape the property and the land would return back to the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least you could walk away with some money. People would take it in a heartbeat, but as of now, no one\u2019s been given anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer this takes it just bleeds people dry and destroys their credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents in Portugese Bend in Rancho Palos Verdes are fed up.
