{"id":670871,"date":"2026-03-21T06:19:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T06:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/670871\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T06:19:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T06:19:14","slug":"sea-lions-released-back-into-the-water-after-shocking-shootings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/670871\/","title":{"rendered":"Sea lions released back into the water after shocking shootings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A trio of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/23\/us-news\/sea-lion-rescued-with-highly-disturbing-injuries-in-la-creek-miraculously-survives\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adorable sea lions pups<\/a> was released back into the sea off Redondo Beach Friday after weeks in the care of rescuers who discovered them separated from their mother.<\/p>\n<p>The three pups \u2014 Knoxie, Happy and Halfpipe \u2014 were found emaciated when rescuers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/marinemammalcare.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Marine Mammal Care Center<\/a> found them at <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/26\/us-news\/the-cleanest-and-grossest-beaches-in-california-and-where-the-iconic-santa-monica-pier-ranks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan Beach, Dockweiler Beach<\/a> and Will Rogers State Beach in late January and early February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re more or less <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/14\/opinion\/americans-need-to-come-together-and-rediscover-what-made-this-country-great-before-its-too-late\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rediscovering the ocean today<\/a>,\u201d Marine Mammal Care Center Executive Director John Warner told The Post. \u201cTo them, it looks scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Warner described the pups clinging to each other in a moment that felt almost human David Buchan for Ca Post<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s reason to be afraid \u2014 as the sea lions are returning to increasingly dangerous territory.<\/p>\n<p>The animals have been found shot and maimed in what veterinarians warned is a growing pattern of violence.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for the California Morning Report newsletter\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCalifornia&#8217;s top news, sports and entertainment delivered to your inbox every day.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Post<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/01\/us-news\/sea-lions-shot-across-southern-california-in-disturbing-wave-of-attacks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> first reported<\/a> that sea lions have been washing up across Southern California with bullets lodged in their skulls, pellets in their hearts, their jaws blown apart and spines snapped.<\/p>\n<p>The cases stretch across the coastline, from Redondo Beach and Santa Monica to Marina del Rey and the Port of Los Angeles, and investigators believe the violence is not isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Three sea lion pups, Knoxie, Happy and Half Pike, were released after weeks of care at the Marine Mammal Care Center. It is also launching what Warner calls a \u201cmarina watch,\u201d urging boaters, dockworkers and coastal residents to stay alert and report suspicious activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone is doing this,\u201d Warner said. \u201cAnd the only way to stop it is to make them afraid of getting caught.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even as lawmakers push to elevate the sea lion\u2019s status, veterinarians and rescuers are sounding the alarm over a surge in brutal attacks David Buchan for Ca Post<\/p>\n<p>MMCC is now backing a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Laura Richardson also announced new legislation to designate the California sea lion the official state pinniped, a move aimed at boosting recognition and protection for the iconic marine animals.<\/p>\n<p>The designation would not automatically increase penalties for perpetrators of violence against sea lions, but Warner said it could shift public perception and make crimes against them even harder to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not necessarily greater legal protection tied to the designation,\u201d he said, \u201cbut it does make the crime even more egregious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>California Senator Laura Richardson joins the Marine Mammal Care Centre for the release of three rehabilitated sea lion pups at Redondo Beach Pier. Marine Mammal Care Center<\/p>\n<p>The push comes at a time when sea lions are already under pressure from every direction.<\/p>\n<p>Warner pointed to warming ocean temperatures, toxic algae blooms and declining food sources as ongoing threats.
