A tale of two booths in the Riverland\"Sara<\/p>\n

In the hot afternoon sun, queues stretched into the carpark at\u00a0Loxton High School<\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0Riverland\u00a0<\/b>electorate of\u00a0Chaffey<\/b>.<\/p>\n

With temperatures in the high 20s, polling booth workers allowed families with young children and the elderly to skip the line, which peaked at 200 metres at around 10am.<\/p>\n

Loxton\u00a0<\/b>resident\u00a0Bill O’Neil<\/b>\u00a0said he was more concerned about the flies than the lines.<\/p>\n

He said voting seemed \u201cpretty quick\u201d and was glad to be taken to the front of the queue.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, there were no lines about 7 kilometres away at\u00a0Loxton North Primary School<\/b>, which had experienced tech issues earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

Labor HQ prepping for big night\"Daniel<\/p>\n

The scene is set for a big night at Labor HQ <\/b>\u2014 held at the Drive <\/b>alongside Adelaide Oval<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Staffers are getting everything organised and we expect supporters to start trickling in slowly after the polls close at 6pm.<\/p>\n

The premier will also make his way here later in the evening and deliver what is widely expected to be a victory speech.<\/p>\n

Confusion in the Opal Capital leaves the town in ‘a bit of a dizzy’\"Sara<\/p>\n

Coober Pedy <\/b>local Lindsay Payne <\/b>showed up to cast his vote today, only to find the polling booth was not where he expected.<\/p>\n

Unlike previous elections, the Electoral Commission <\/b>did not plan any voting services for the outback town today and instead provided early voting on March 14 and 15.<\/p>\n

However, many residents said they did not find out about the change until after those dates, leaving them with either a 1,000-kilometre round trip or no opportunity to vote at all.<\/p>\n

After residents voiced their concerns, the ECSA <\/b>yesterday announced it would divert a plane heading to flood-affected areas to Coober Pedy to ensure the town could vote.<\/p>\n

But the changes flew under Mr Payne’s<\/b> radar and with the plane packed up and gone, he does not think he will be able to vote.<\/p>\n

\n

“I went into town to go and vote, and there wasn’t anybody there,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I spoke to my pastor up here too; he told me that the whole town is in a bit of a dizzy at the moment \u2026 nobody knows what’s going on.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Electoral Commission<\/b> has previously said residents would not be fined for failing to vote.<\/p>\n

We placed an absentee vote in Finnis for our electorate Bragg. Will do it again the line was shorter than those within the electorate. We really need to make it easier to exercise our democratic rights – the long queues need to be redressed. Surely there is a [somewhere] we could login, online and vote. This IRL process is antiquated in a digital age.<\/p>\n

Technology hiccups felt right across the state\"Sara<\/p>\n

While some booths across the state battled with technology, illness was behind a delayed start at SA’s southernmost polling booth.<\/p>\n

Voters at Port MacDonnell<\/b>, in the seat of Mount Gambier<\/b>, had to wait until midday to cast their ballot due to illness-related staffing shortages.<\/p>\n

Local voter Bruce Kent<\/b> was planning on voting earlier in the morning, but came back later in the day.<\/p>\n

\n

“It’s a bit ridiculous. It’s a central town in a big area \u2013 a lot of people vote here,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

ECSA <\/b>said staff were redeployed from other booths to ensure the booth at Port MacDonnell could eventually open 4 hours late.<\/p>\n

Long queues were snaking around Goodwood Primary School <\/b>this morning in the marginal Liberal <\/b>(2.2 per cent) seat of Unley<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Liberal <\/b>candidate Rosalie Rotolo <\/b>was seen handing out flyers and putting in every last effort to sway undecided voters.<\/p>\n

Retiring Liberal David Pisoni<\/b> has held the seat since 2006.<\/p>\n

While long a safe Liberal <\/b>seat, the 2022 election saw a far more mixed geographic result, with Labor recording majorities across polling places in the northern half of Unley<\/b>, while the Liberals <\/b>won most booths further south.<\/p>\n

The ABC will have reporters at the election functions of the major parties \u2013 but not at tonight’s One Nation <\/b>gathering.<\/p>\n

The party has barred the ABC from its function at the Kent Town Hotel<\/b>, the same venue where it held its campaign launch a month ago.<\/p>\n

It cited the ABC’s reporting over its now-dumped candidate for Adelaide, Aoi Baxter<\/b><\/a>, as the reason for its decision.<\/p>\n

One Nation’s rise in the polls has been one of the major stories of the campaign, with tonight’s election count looming as a litmus test for the party at national level.<\/p>\n

Early voting affects fundraisers\"Sara<\/p>\n

Black Forest Primary School<\/b> is the location of a polling centre in the electorate of Badcoe<\/b>, in Adelaide’s south-western suburbs. It’s currently held by Labor’s Jayne Stinson<\/b>, and is considered a very safe Labor <\/b>seat.<\/p>\n

On election day, the school’s Parents and Friends Committee<\/b> hosted a sausage sizzle, bake sale and served up takeaway coffees for voters.<\/p>\n

Loren Quinn <\/b>is the committee’s chair, and said all the bake sale items were donated by committee members and people at the school.<\/p>\n

\n

“All those profits will go towards some projects that we’ve got, so we’re wanting to upgrade our canteen, and then also are planning our sports rings and soccer goals and there’s another pool of money that will go to each junior, primary, middle primary and upper primary, for them to be able to spend,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC)<\/b> more than 400,000 South Australians<\/b> have already cast their vote in early voting, which Ms Quinn<\/b> explained\u00a0made planning the election day fundraising event more challenging.<\/p>\n

\n

“Definitely early voting over the years that we have seen, it’s become more popular and it has drawn less people coming to get your democracy sausage and all of that, so definitely we’ve noticed that drop in people coming and loading on the day,” she said.<\/p>\n

“One election we raised close to $6,000 and then the next election, which would have been the federal election, that must have been COVID years as well and we only raised about $3,500 so yeah a big difference in that, and then having leftover food that we couldn’t sell.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ms Quinn<\/b> said the Parents and Friends Committee had been working hard to find that “sweet spot” of preparation \u2014 how many sausages to buy and cakes to make, to ensure there’s enough to sell on the day that also makes a profit.<\/p>\n

\n

“We pretty much order \u2014 I think it’s about 700 sausages, last year [at the federal election] we sold out very \u2026 I think it was almost like, by 2pm we were pretty much entirely sold out [of sausages] and our bake sale was pretty much gone as well,” she said.<\/p>\n

“And that’s the thing, we have to get to that point that we still have to put in that cost, but we need to know that we’re recovering that cost on the day.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nation closely watching SA election\"Sara<\/p>\n

For the first time since One Nation’s <\/b>dramatic opinion polling surge in late 2025, voters in the SA election <\/b>have cast their ballots.<\/p>\n

And it will give political watchers across the country a better answer to some key questions.<\/p>\n

Will that opinion polling surge be replicated for One Nation<\/b> on election day? And will that translate into Pauline Hanson’s<\/b> party winning lower house seats?<\/p>\n

This morning, Premier Peter Malinauskas<\/b> cast his ballot with his family at Woodville Gardens<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Mr Malinauskas<\/b> told reporters his top priority would be to make sure the state’s economy “continues to head in the right direction”.<\/p>\n

“Making sure that economic growth delivers better living standards, and that, of course, I think means houses are central to that equation,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Later in the morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese <\/b>and Mr Malinauskas cooked up sausages at a polling booth in Hectorville <\/b>in Adelaide’s east<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The eastern suburbs seat is held by the former opposition leader Vincent Tarzia<\/b> with a 3.6 per cent margin but Labor’s Jenn Roberts<\/b> is hoping to snag it from him.<\/p>\n

Mr Albanese put on the charm for voters but didn’t stay to talk to the media during the visit.<\/p>\n

Voters were impressed by the prime minister dropping into their local school.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, Ashton Hurn<\/b> voted in her home town of Angaston<\/b>.<\/p>\n

But it was her toddler Rupert <\/b>who was the real star of the\u00a0show.<\/p>\n

The farming and football family has been in the Barossa for seven generations and appears to have the support of many of the locals who spoke to the ABC.<\/p>\n

Grape grower Merv Storton<\/b> used to play football with Ms Hurn’s<\/b> father William (but spent more time on the bench than him, he says).<\/p>\n

“I’ve voted for Ashton<\/b>. I think she’ll bring some stability to the Liberal Party<\/b> in this state \u2014 because they need it,” Mr Storton<\/b> said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
