{"id":674371,"date":"2026-03-22T19:17:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T19:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/674371\/"},"modified":"2026-03-22T19:17:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T19:17:17","slug":"workforce-pell-progresses-but-access-may-lag-until-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/674371\/","title":{"rendered":"Workforce Pell progresses, but access may lag until 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Workforce Pell, the long-awaited expansion of Pell Grants for students in non-academic certificates and workforce training programs, was initially expected to launch this summer, but higher education officials warn it could be 2027 before students can tap into this funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing at this point is making sure we are able to submit and get approval for programs to be eligible for Workforce Pell,\u201d said Priscilla Camacho, Alamo Colleges District\u2019s chief legislative, industry and external relations officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope and desire would be to have the ability to [start] approving students for Workforce Pell programs in late 2026, but we are realistically looking at 2027,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Approved as part of the 2025 \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill Act,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/alamo-colleges-seeks-to-maximize-access-with-new-workforce-pell-grants\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/alamo-colleges-seeks-to-maximize-access-with-new-workforce-pell-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Workforce Pell is slated to expand access<\/a> to the need-based federal Pell Grants beyond academic degree programs. Students interested in short-term programs to enter high-demand, high-wage industry sectors could soon apply to receive this financial assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the early set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-issues-proposed-rules-implement-working-families-tax-cuts-acts-workforce-pell-grants\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-issues-proposed-rules-implement-working-families-tax-cuts-acts-workforce-pell-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rules released by the Department of Education<\/a>, the governors of each state are expected to approve the programs that will qualify for Workforce Pell.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highered.texas.gov\/texas-begins-work-to-help-expand-federal-financial-aid-for-short-term-workforce-training\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.highered.texas.gov\/texas-begins-work-to-help-expand-federal-financial-aid-for-short-term-workforce-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board<\/a> confirmed the agency will work in conjunction with the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Workforce Investment Council to identify eligible programs in areas of high-demand and high-wages.<\/p>\n<p>Across the nation about 32% of all undergraduate students received Pell Grants during the 2024-25 academic year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ipeds\/trendgenerator\/app\/answer\/8\/35\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ipeds\/trendgenerator\/app\/answer\/8\/35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Center for Education Statistics<\/a>. At Alamo Colleges, more than 28,000 students qualified for Pell that same year, with an average award of $4,964 .<\/p>\n<p>This is an expansion that Alamo Colleges officials have had in their agenda for over a decade, Camacho said.
