A woman was killed after a fire broke out in a Harlem apartment building on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

Police and fire officials were called to the six-story building on West 140th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Frederick Douglass Boulevard just after 4:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n

An unidentified 62-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, cops said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe smoke was really dark, really heavy coming out the window. When you see that many firetrucks, you know you\u2019ve got a serious fire on your hands. It\u2019s just a terrible tragedy that there had to be a victim,\u201d witness Nyla Redding , 28, told The Post.<\/p>\n

Roughly 80 fire and EMS personnel worked to battle the blaze, PIX 11 reported. <\/a><\/p>\n

The 1-alarm fire was later extinguished over an hour later, authorities added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looked really bad for a minute there \u2014 but I didn\u2019t find out until later that someone had died,\u201d said 40-year-old witness Anthony March.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel terrible for her, terrible for her family. One minute you\u2019re enjoying a beautiful Sunday, the next you\u2019re gone. And such a terrible way to go,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

A charred teddy bear was spotted on the roof of an SUV in front of the building where the flames broke out.<\/p>\n

The cause of the inferno is under investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshals\u2019 office.<\/p>\n
