{"id":676291,"date":"2026-03-23T15:46:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/676291\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T15:46:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:46:17","slug":"chinas-open-source-dominance-threatens-us-ai-lead-us-advisory-body-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/676291\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s open-source dominance threatens US AI lead, US advisory body warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">BEIJING, March 23 (Reuters) &#8211; The dominance of China&#8217;s open-source <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:artificial intelligence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;artificial intelligence&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a> is creating a &#8220;self-reinforcing competitive advantage&#8221;, allowing it to challenge U.S. rivals despite restricted access to advanced AI chips, a U.S. congressional advisory body \u200csaid on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Driven by their cheaper cost, Chinese large language models from firms including Alibaba, Moonshot and MiniMax \u200cnow dominate worldwide usage rankings on platforms like HuggingFace and OpenRouter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Beijing&#8217;s push to deploy AI throughout a wide range of sectors to upgrade its manufacturing \u200bbase, factories, logistics networks and robotics is generating real-world data that feeds back into model improvement, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;This open ecosystem enables China to innovate close to the frontier despite significant compute constraints,&#8221; the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission wrote in a report published on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;Chinese labs have narrowed performance gaps with top Western large language models,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">U.S. lawmakers have imposed successive \u200crounds of export restrictions on China since \u20602022, banning them from acquiring the most advanced AI chips, though Washington approved exports of <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NVDA\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nvidia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Nvidia&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nvidia<\/a>&#8216;s second-most advanced chip in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">U.S. companies including ChatGPT developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/organizations\/openai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:OpenAI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;OpenAI&quot;}\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI<\/a> and Anthropic, creator of Claude, \u2060as well as traditional tech giants have, meanwhile, invested billions of dollars to remain at the forefront of the new technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">But their position could be under threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;Open model proliferation creates alternative pathways to AI leadership,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">CHINA POISED TO CAPITALISE ON SHIFT TO \u200bEMBODIED AI<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Some \u200bestimates suggest that around 80% of U.S. AI startups now use \u200bChinese open-source AI models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">DeepSeek&#8217;s groundbreaking R1 model launched \u200clast year quickly overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded model on the U.S. App Store. And Alibaba&#8217;s Qwen family of models has surpassed Meta&#8217;s Llama in global cumulative downloads, according to HuggingFace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">As AI&#8217;s frontiers shift from large language models towards agentic AI and physical, or embodied, AI, China may be better positioned to capitalise on its mass data collection efforts to boost development of humanoid robots, autonomous driving software or even dual-purpose technologies, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a bit of a deployment gap in \u200cthe embodied AI space between the U.S. and China.
