(Supplied: Phillip Corlis)<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Ms Cardow thought it was very funny to have a rifle part [from the cenotaph] shoved down her pants and jokingly indicated it was a penis,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In my view, a specific deterrence is needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Court documents said the pair told police they intended to return the stone rifle barrel to the monument, but &#8220;there were too many people around to do so discreetly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead, they posted it to the Dorrigo RSL Club the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Court documents also revealed a worker at the pub found a second piece of marble in the hotel the following morning and took it to Dorrigo RSL Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Defence solicitor Carlo Bianchino told the court the pair had &#8220;extreme remorse for what happened&#8221;, demonstrated by Claridge&#8217;s negotiations with Bellingen Shire Council to pay the insurance excess of $25,000 for the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He told the court Ms Cardow felt she had been &#8220;villainised&#8221; on social media following the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[She] hopes the community of Dorrigo can forgive them for their grave mistakes,&#8221; Mr Bianchino said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young woman partially hides her face under a blanket.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/5abf1e1b12011c78492ebe62e82a7310\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Toni Cardow concealed her face after her conviction for an offensive act on a war memorial. (ABC News: Claire Simmonds)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The defence asked the magistrate to record no conviction and instead order a compensation payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the magistrate convicted Claridge of intentionally or recklessly destroying or damaging property and wilfully damaging a war memorial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Cardow was convicted of committing an offensive act on a war memorial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The magistrate sentenced Claridge to a 12-month community corrections order, issuing a fine of $400 and ordering him to pay $25,000 to Bellingen Shire Council in compensation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Cardow was fined $750.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up of a stone statue of a soldier holding a gun.
