HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 In an expanded role, the Texans <\/a>have named Hannah McNair chief community officer<\/p>\n

That\u2019s in addition to her Texans foundation vice president role. She has been instrumental to the Texans\u2019 growth, including the planned development of Toro District, the team\u2019s new sports and entertainment venue and team headquarters in Bridgeland set to open in 2029.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Steve Johnson was named chief planning officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be named Chief Community Officer because our community means so much to me,\u201d McNair said in a statement. \u201cGiving back has always been at the heart of who we are as an organization and that started with Bob and Janice. She has been an incredible mentor to me and laid the groundwork for the foundation\u2019s success and my growth in this role. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that football changes lives and I\u2019m excited about the new opportunities and support we will bring to the community as we continue to grow. As we enter this exciting chapter, I\u2019m looking forward to the impact we will continue to make here at home and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team said, in a release, that McNair \u201cwill provide strategic and visionary leadership to align the club\u2019s community initiatives with broader strategic business priorities, driving even greater impact across Houston and the region. Over the past two years, she has built a dynamic team that has tripled the reach and impact of the foundation, positioning it for sustained growth and deeper community impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

McNair has been pushing for girls flag football to become a sanctioned sport in the state of Texans.<\/p>\n

The Texans girls flag football program launched in 2023 has more than 150 high schools and over 3,750 female athletes across the state.<\/p>\n

She is a member of the NFL Flag Football working group started last year to guide the sport\u2019s global growth and inclusion in the 2028 Olympics.<\/p>\n

McNair has been a consistent and dedicated supporter of the greater Houston community, including leading disaster relief efforts.<\/p>\n

A native Houstonian and the wife of Texans principal owner, chairman and CEO Cal McNair, Hannah McNair joined the Lady Texans, an organization comprised of the wives and significant others of Texans players, coaches and executives that supports the team and the Texans Foundation, in 2009. The foundation has raised more than $51 million since its inception in 2002 by leveraging the power of football to strengthen the community, support youth development, and break down barriers to fundamental resources. <\/p>\n

In this new role, Johnson is responsible for driving strategic planning, organizational development, and forward-looking initiatives that support the club\u2019s long-term business objectives and operational success, with a strong focus on the Toro District. This is his second stint with the team as he previously served in a variety of business and football operations roles from 2020 to 2024. <\/p>\n

Prior to joining the Texans, Johnson spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, most recently serving as a Battalion Commander in Fort Hood, Texas where he led 635 Soldiers with full responsibility for work assignments, scheduling, performance review, disciplinary action, and long-term career planning, development, and promotion.<\/p>\n

The Texans previously unveiled their planned ultra-modern team training facility and team headquarters in Bridgeland.<\/p>\n

The Texans are working to build \u2018Toro District,\u2019 an 83-acre sports and entertainment complex development set for Northwest Harris County with a projected move-in date of 2029.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistoric day, we\u2019re thrilled to give you an exclusive look at the Toro District,\u201d Cal McNair said during a press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about wanting to build a new headquarters and training facility for years, and we\u2019re finally here. Starting in 2029, this will be the home for the Houston Texans outside of gameday. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a major development for the organization. It will reshape the way we engage with fans, youth, partners in the greater Houston community. It\u2019s the biggest move our organization has made since our inception. At the forefront of our decision making was the football team and how we can best support our coaches and players. This provides us with a competitive advantage and puts them in an ideal situation every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gensler, a global architecture and design firm, is leading the master planning design for Toro District, while Howard Hughes Communities manages leasing for the development. The Texans will participate in the development of Toro District through an affiliate. <\/p>\n

The path that the Texans and Howard Hughes Holdings traveled to create plans for a world-class training facility <\/a>and team headquarters involved crisscrossing the nation.<\/p>\n

How the Texans and Howard Hughes, their real estate partner, created a vision for \u2018Toro District,\u2019 an 83-acre sports and entertainment complex development set for Bridgeland in Northwest Harris County with a projected move-in date of 2029, involved a significant amount of market research.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel very lucky to have partners that are the best at what they do and understand the magnitude of this project for both us and the community,\u201d said Hannah McNair, Texans foundation vice president. \u201cWe have talked about how our organization is going rapidly in a number of different ways. We wanted something world-class to match where we are headed. This will be an industry tone-setter for the global sports and entertainment industry. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Howard Hughes came to us, this was an opportunity to build something iconic. This further emphasizes our goals of bringing a championship to Houston and making sports more accessible to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the past year, the Texans and Howard Hughes visited multiple sports facilities and multi-purpose developments. That included The Star, the Dallas Cowboys\u2019 practice hub in Frisco and adjacent retail and entertainment center Legacy West, The Battery, which the training center for the Atlanta Braves, the New England Patriots\u2019 team facility and stadium, in Foxborough, Mass and other venues. Cal McNair, Hannah McNair and the Texans envision an ultra-modern destination for the team and staff to work under the same roof all year long along with a fun destination for fans.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s the good, the bad and the ugly of all the other mixed-use developments around sports-anchored catalysts,” Howard Hughes CEO David O\u2019Reilly told KPRC 2. \u201cBoth the Howard Hughes team and the Houston Texans team have spent a lot of time over the past several months on airplanes touring all of the above. The way we\u2019ve thought about the Toro District is that we\u2019re going to do our own best-of collection, and we\u2019re going to take the best of each one of those mixed-use entertainment districts that are around sports catalysts and create one that is authentic to us, authentic to Bridgeland, authentic to Harris County, and pure Texans all the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that perspective, we\u2019re going to be able to create probably the best sports and entertainment district in terms of places to live, work, play, shop, dine, and experience that\u2019s ever been built. I think that the McNairs and the Texans had a choice of any location in Houston where they would want to do this. And I am humbled and honored that they chose to partner with Howard Hughes. It\u2019s unique when you\u2019re able to align public leadership with a long-term community builder like Howard Hughes and a world-class NFL franchise. You can really build something that\u2019s both economically powerful and community-centered. That\u2019s exactly what we\u2019ve done here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Howard Hughes Holdings has significant experience in this type of mixed-used project.<\/p>\n

They built the headquarters for the Las Vegas Knights at City National Arena in Summerlin, which operates as the NHL\u2019s practice facility and community ice rink that opened in 2017 as a 145,000 square-foot facility with two NHL-regulation rinks, a team store and other features. <\/p>\n

The partnership includes the Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Las Vegas Aviators, a Triple A baseball franchise that\u2019s the affiliate of the Oakland A\u2019s. Howard Hughes are the owners of the Aviators.<\/p>\n

Summerlin is a master-planned community in the Las Vegas Valley adjacent to Red Rock Canyon built by Howard Hughes, which also developed The Woodlands, Woodland Hills, Bridgeland in Texas, West Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, Merriweather District in Columbia, Maryland and Ward Village in Honolulu, Hawaii.<\/p>\n

\u201cToro District is not just a headquarters, it\u2019s one of those great opportunities,\u201d said O\u2019Reilly, who thanked Harris County Commissioners Lesley Briones and Tom Ramsey. \u201cGreat opportunity that will create thousands of great moments for years to come. Growth is coming. It\u2019s about aligning infrastructure, opportunity and leadership. I want to thank Cal and Hannah McNair for their deep commitment and Mike Tomon. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Texans aren\u2019t just building a headquarters. They\u2019re planting a long-term flag in Bridgeland. They are going to write the next chapter in Houston history. We are proud to build what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Reilly said several retailers are already looking to engage with a construction project projected to create $34 billion in economic growth over 30 years as well as 17,000 in jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cRetailers as well as people that are looking for opportunities to find their next home nearby this incredible activation,\u201d O\u2019Reilly said. \u201cLas Vegas, one of our master planned communities, where we built a practice facility for the Golden Knights as well as the full-time stadium for the Las Vegas Aviators, those two are anchored about a mixed-use entertainment district that\u2019s consistently ranked as one of the best places to be in the Las Vegas Valley.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is tremendous. It brings the best of both together in terms of economic output, growth to the region, infrastructure, restaurant shopping, workforce opportunities, youth programming, an incredible civic gathering place, and a community activation that makes the lives of the residents in that area even more fulfilled and better. I\u2019m as excited as I can be in my career here of building communities. At the end of the day, this is about building Houston\u2019s future, not just the headquarters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project is being built through a public-private partnership approved unanimously by Harris County officials. A projected $150 million share will be paid for through a tax increment reinvestment zone with a portion of country property taxes allocated annually for infrastructure in the area for the project, Briones told KPRC 2 in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a great day in Harris County and to be a Houston Texans fan and to be a Texan,\u201d Briones said.<\/p>\n

The Texans plan to break ground this year and move into their new digs during the summer of 2029. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts with being thoughtful, and it starts with understanding what the mission is and the focus and the main thing is football,\u201d Texans team president Mike Tomon told KPRC 2 during an interview at NRG Stadium. \u201cHow do we put our team and the overall organization in a position to make their job of becoming world-class and focused in on the goal, how do you make sure, as all of this is going on, how do you make sure it\u2019s the main thing? And that\u2019s been the driver that we started with is how do we create a competitive advantage for the football team? And everything else kind of falling in line thereafter. Starting top down, it\u2019s a commitment to win championships.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough Cal\u2019s vision, we started to narrow in on that area. We wanted to make sure we have a competitive advantage for the team. It was also making sure we make a really positive impact on the community. We have some great programs that we\u2019re working in partnership with the county to roll out that will benefit high school students as well as colleges and local residents from a jobs perspective. All those pieces were really important to the McNairs. We\u2019re really excited to land in this spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texans had clearly outgrown NRG Stadium and needed more space to operate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s friction on how we go through our day,\u201d Tomon said. \u201cThis puts us in a position where we can all be together in this world-class training facility and headquarters and focus in on our goal. We have big aspirations. The organization is growing. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this is a great representation of where we\u2019re going and how the best way to get there. I think it feels perfect because it\u2019s identifiable. It\u2019s academic. We can see how we get there. We have the ability to plan and be really thoughtful along the way. We really looked at this as a unique opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

There will be 175,000 square feet set aside for team headquarters, and an indoor fieldhouse of roughly 150,000 square feet. This will allow the team to practice indoors to account for the Houston heat and unpredictable weather patterns.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a really fortunate situation,\u201d Tomon said. \u201cWe have a lot of confidence in the experience we have, being able to lean on that. From the McNair\u2019s standpoint and the Texans overall, we have a really great comfort in who we are. When you go into these projects, there\u2019s a tactical piece and there\u2019s a strategic piece. It\u2019s the best of both worlds with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really important for us to have the right real estate development partner. Howard Hughes is world-class. Not only did you need a world-class partner, but you needed one that understood two main components Houston and what a sports-anchored environment needs to look like and how it best works. And they have a fantastic credibility sheet, especially highlighted by what they did in Summerlin in Las Vegas with the Golden Knights. And so we really felt like they were the right partners to go do something special.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texans would hold training camp in Bridgeland along with hosting community events and youth sports activities, including girls flag football.<\/p>\n

The development in the community is expected to include hotel, entertainment, commercial, medical space, retail and restaurants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Texans, since they\u2019ve been around, have been about community, about giving back,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cI think there\u2019s no better example of that than building this facility in the Northwest Harris County area that is truly engaging with fans and within a three-hour drive time of this location, you have 5% of the United States population.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so many landmarks and milestones between here and there, it\u2019s going to be a consistent drumbeat over the next 18 to 24 months of great events that bring us closer and closer to that day where we\u2019ll be moving the McNairs and the entire team in for their new home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The AFC South franchise shares NRG Stadium, the site of their games, with the rodeo along with concerts and other events held there throughout the year. And that has created frequent spacing and scheduling conflicts as they conducted practices during the season along with training camp and offseason activities. Tomon emphasized to KPRC 2 that the focus remains on finding workable, financially viable solutions to upgrade NRG Stadium. They are under a lease that expires in 2032.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The priority for the Texans regarding the multi-use, 72,220 capacity stadium built in 2002 at a cost of $352 million is to renovate the facility, which is in need of extensive and expensive repairs and general improvements, in partnership with Harris County, the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.<\/p>\n

Relocation to a new stadium isn\u2019t the Texans\u2019 stated goal. They want to refurbish the stadium.<\/p>\n

Negotiations are active and ongoing with lots of time left on the current lease. The Texans are attempting to be proactive about the stadium situation.<\/p>\n

Contractually, the Texans are not responsible for the repair and upkeep of the stadium. That task lies with Harris County under the terms of the lease arrangement. The Texans have contributed millions of dollars, though, toward multiple repairs and maintenance of the stadium since the launch of the franchise in 2002 by the late founder Bob McNair, Cal McNair\u2019s father.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely, our focus is to be here,\u201d Tomon said. \u201cOur focus is to be at NRG Park. As we like to say, \u2018You want to see us on our biggest moments? Come to NRG. You want to see us on our day-to-day, the other 350 days a year? Come to Bridgeland. And so that\u2019s kind of how we look at the Toro District. And our focus remains making this our competitive advantage here at NRG.\u201d<\/p>\n

The project, a multiple-year collaboration, passed unanimously during county commissioners\u2019 court, a 5-0 balloting, that approves the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be a major impact for Bridgeland and the neighboring communities,\u201d Briones said. \u201cI was very pleased that unanimously at court we passed the framework for a landmark public-private partnership that will spur transformative economic development for Northwest Harris County, which is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. In the next 25 years, Harris County is projected to grow by 40 percent. In this Northwest area, we\u2019re expecting to see approximately 300 percent growth. This is just astronomical. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis Toro District will catalyze economic development and growth. Seventeen thousand of the 60,000 jobs created in the next decade will be directly attributed to the Toro District. I used to be a teacher and I\u2019m a mom of three little girls. I am thrilled that there will be internships for students. There will be sports programming. There will be opportunities for the school districts to use the stadium there for things like graduations. I\u2019m also very thrilled that the development will be done with public dollars will adhere to all of our county policies. We\u2019re creating economic opportunity. There\u2019s huge wins on the infrastructure front as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toro District is expected to significantly boost economic development in the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just a headquarters, it is a statement about where Houston is going,\u201d O\u2019Reilly said. \u201cWhen you bring together visionary public leadership, a world-class NFL franchise, and a long-term development partner, you can do something far bigger than any one organization alone. <\/p>\n

\u201cToro District will create jobs, strengthen infrastructure, expand access to services, and deliver a gathering place that families will enjoy for generations. We are incredibly proud to partner with the Texans and Harris County to build something that reflects the ambition and energy of this region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texans, under the leadership of coach DeMeco Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio, have qualified for the postseason each of the past three seasons and won one playoff game annually. They lost in the AFC divisional round each of the past three seasons, falling to the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens.<\/p>\n

The Texans, including the top-ranked defense in the NFL, are expected to have back the core of their roster for next season.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel really fortunate,\u201d Tomon said. \u201dWe have such great leadership, from ownership to coach to Nick. We have a really special locker room. This is a special time in Houston right now, so we\u2019re excited for the future.”<\/p>\n
