\n\tJohn Boyega<\/a> confirmed to \u201cStar Wars<\/a>\u201d fans at Megacon Orlando (via ScreenRant<\/a>) that he\u2019s spoken to new Lucasfilm boss Dave Filoni<\/a>, who is now the studio\u2019s chief creative officer and president following the exit<\/a> of Kathleen Kennedy. The specifics of what Boyega and Filoni spoke about were not revealed. When a fan yelled out to Boyega to \u201cget Dave on the phone\u201d after he was asked about returning to \u201cStar Wars\u201d as Finn, the actor answered: \u201cI actually have, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBoyega debuted as Finn in 2015\u2019s \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d and reprised the character in 2017\u2019s \u201cThe Last Jedi\u201d and 2019\u2019s \u201cThe Rise of Skywalker.\u201d His role in the trilogy led to online harassment from racist and toxic \u201cStar Wars\u201d fans upset with a Black actor playing one of the leads in the long-running space franchise. Over the years, Boyega has called out<\/a> both racist fans and Disney. He put the studio on blast for fumbling diversity in his trilogy, pointing to reduced storylines for characters of color and more.<\/p>\n

\n\tBoyega\u00a0first aired his \u201cStar Wars\u201d grievances to\u00a0GQ magazine<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, saying at the time: \u201cWhat I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It\u2019s not good. I\u2019ll say it straight up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou guys knew what to do with Daisy Ridley, you knew what to do with Adam Driver,\u201d Boyega continued. \u201cBut when it came to Kelly Marie Tran, when it came to John Boyega, you know fuck all. So what do you want me to say? What they want you to say is, \u2018I enjoyed being a part of it. It was a great experience\u2026\u2019 Nah, nah, nah. I\u2019ll take that deal when it\u2019s a great experience. They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let\u2019s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I\u2019m not exposing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBoyega later\u00a0revealed to THR<\/a>\u00a0that a Disney executive reached out to him following his GQ interview. He said he had \u201ca very honest, a very transparent conversation\u201d with the exec and added: \u201cThere was a lot of explaining on their end in terms of the way they saw things. They gave me a chance also to explain what my experience was like. I\u2019d hope that me being so open with my career, at this stage, would help the next man, the guy that wants to be the assistant DOP, the guy that wants to be a producer. I hope that the conversation is not such a taboo or elephant in the room now, because someone just came and said it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA few years later in 2022, Boyega appeared to distance himself from Finn by telling SiriusXM<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cat this point I\u2019m cool off it, I\u2019m good off it\u201d when asked about returning to the \u201cStar Wars\u201d franchise. He added: \u201cVersatility is my path and Finn is at a good confirmation point where you can just enjoy him in other things: the games, the animation. I feel like [Episodes] 7 to 9 was good for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, Boyega appeared in the Apple TV+ original documentary \u201cNumber One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood\u201d\u00a0and slammed racist \u201cStar Wars\u201d fans <\/a>for only accepting Black actors up to a certain point.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLemme tell ya, \u2018Star Wars\u2019 always had the vibe of being in the most whitest, elite space. It\u2019s a franchise that\u2019s so white that a Black person existing in [it] was something,\u201d Boyega said in the documentary. \u201cYou can always tell it\u2019s something when some \u2018Star Wars\u2019 fans try to say, \u2018Well, we had Lando Calrissian and had Samuel L. Jackson!\u2019 It\u2019s like telling me how many cookie chips are in the cookie dough. It\u2019s like, they just scattered that in there, bro!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re okay with us playing the best friend, but once we touch their heroes, once we lead, once we trailblaze, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my God, it\u2019s just a bit too much!
