{"id":67679,"date":"2025-07-16T17:08:18","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67679\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T17:08:18","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:08:18","slug":"restaurant-in-china-criticized-for-offering-tea-and-lion-cub-hugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67679\/","title":{"rendered":"Restaurant in China criticized for offering tea and lion cub hugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-72723a\" class=\"body-graf\">A restaurant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna40838547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the northern Chinese province of Shanxi<\/a> offering hugs with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/scientists-pull-extinct-cave-lion-cubs-russian-permafrost-n1276137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lion cubs<\/a> while diners have a four-course tea has been criticized by animal welfare groups and drawn condemnation online, however the restaurant says the cubs are well cared for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-026ebd\" class=\"body-graf\">Some customers of Wanhui restaurant in Taiyuan city have posted pictures and video clips of themselves cradling lion cubs on China\u2018s WeChat and Weibo platforms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ea7d79\" class=\"body-graf\">Wanhui, which opened in June, sells about 20 tickets a day to customers looking to snuggle with the animals as part of a set menu costing 1,078 yuan ($150).<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a4f3d6\" class=\"body-graf\">The restaurant told Reuters that it did have lion cubs at the restaurant and that they were taken care of very well, with specialized carers to tend to them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f50353\" class=\"body-graf\">While some zoos around the world, such as in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/former-singapore-minister-jailed-year-receiving-gifts-landmark-case-rcna173980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Singapore<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/australia\/third-people-sinking-tuvalu-seek-australias-climate-visas-rcna215787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australia<\/a>, offer dining experiences near animal enclosures or views of the wildlife, it is rare for a restaurant to have direct physical interaction with wild animals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c1cac9\" class=\"body-graf\">Besides the cubs, the restaurant also features llamas, turtles and deer on its page on Douyin, China\u2018s counterpart to social media app TikTok.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0144d5\" class=\"body-graf\">Online comments were mostly critical, saying the Chinese restaurant venture was dangerous and not good for the animals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2def7d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis is for the rich to play,\u201d said one Weibo user.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ac11d4\" class=\"body-graf\">Another user urged action by the authorities, adding, \u201cThe relevant departments should take care of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b104c4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cTearing lion cubs from their mothers so diners can handle them over afternoon tea is exploitation, not entertainment. These animals are living, feeling beings, not toys,\u201d People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Senior Vice President Jason Baker told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-acc48d\" class=\"body-graf\">He added that the animals were \u201ctreated like nothing more than social media props.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4e7f72\" class=\"body-graf\">Peter Li, China policy expert for Humane World for Animals, said: \u201cExploiting wild animals for selfies and marketing gimmicks is not only appallingly bad animal welfare, it\u2019s also potentially risky for customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1028f7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cEven a young lion is capable of lashing out and injuring a human.
