{"id":67723,"date":"2025-07-16T17:30:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67723\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T17:30:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:30:13","slug":"yemen-fighters-claim-seizure-of-iranian-supplied-houthi-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67723\/","title":{"rendered":"Yemen fighters claim seizure of Iranian-supplied Houthi weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 Fighters allied to Yemen\u2019s exiled government claimed Wednesday they had seized 750 tons of Iranian-supplied missiles and weaponry bound for the country\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/who-are-yemen-houthis-israel-hamas-war-1cd31b8f97dacf49cb5c4228208d419e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houthi rebels<\/a>, the latest interdiction of arms in the country\u2019s decadelong war allegedly tied to Tehran. <\/p>\n<p>For years, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-politics-yemen-government-middle-east-a5727ab4252add1f33ff5a0fcc4b605f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S. Navy<\/a> and other Western naval forces have seized Iranian arms being sent to the Houthis, who have held Yemen\u2019s capital since 2014 and have been attacking ships in the Red Sea over <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/israel-hamas-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Israel-Hamas war<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The seizure announced Wednesday, however, marked the first major interdiction conducted by the National Resistance Force, a group of fighters allied to Tariq Saleh, a nephew of Yemen\u2019s late strongman leader Ali Abdullah Saleh. <\/p>\n<p>The Houthis and Iran did not acknowledge the seizure, which the National Resistance Force said happened in late June. <\/p>\n<p>A short video package released by the force appeared to show anti-ship missiles, the same kinds used in the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eternity-c-yemen-houthis-red-sea-attack-shipping-849f64d2646d566af51ca0f78e34448f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houthis\u2019 recent attacks that sank two ships<\/a> in the Red Sea, killing at least four people as others remain missing. <\/p>\n<p>The footage also appeared to show Iranian-made Type 358 anti-aircraft missiles. The Houthis claim they downed 26 U.S. MQ-9 drones over the past decade of the Yemen war, likely with those kinds of missiles. The majority of those losses having been acknowledged by the U.S. military. <\/p>\n<p>The footage also appeared to show drone components, warheads and other weapons. The force said it later would release a detailed statement, though it had not appeared hours after the announcement. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. military\u2019s Central Command praised the seizure in a post on the social platform X, saying that the Yemeni force told it \u201cthere were manuals in Farsi and many of the systems were manufactured by a company affiliated with the Iranian Ministry of Defense that is sanctioned by the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interdiction of this massive Iranian shipment shows that Iran remains the most destabilizing actor in the region,\u201d Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM\u2019s commander, was quoted as saying. \u201cLimiting the free flow of Iranian support to the Houthis is critic to regional security, stability and freedom of navigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iran denies arming the rebels, though <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/yemen-houthi-rebels-iran-israel-hamas-war-red-sea-attacks-076e5e764b7bed548b15cff4175bb4d5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tehran-manufactured weaponry has been found on the battlefield<\/a> and in sea shipments heading to Yemen for the Shiite Houthi rebels despite a United Nations arms embargo.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis seized Yemen\u2019s capital, Sanaa, in September 2014 and forced the internationally recognized government into exile. A Saudi-led coalition armed with U.S. weaponry and intelligence entered the war on the side of Yemen\u2019s exiled government in March 2015.
