{"id":677546,"date":"2026-03-24T04:44:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T04:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/677546\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T04:44:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T04:44:14","slug":"huge-freshwater-reservoir-found-hidden-under-the-great-salt-lake-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/677546\/","title":{"rendered":"Huge Freshwater Reservoir Found Hidden Under The Great Salt Lake : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-thought-only-two-animals-lived-in-the-great-salt-lake-they-were-wrong\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Great Salt Lake<\/a> is so named because of the salinity of its water, but a new study appears to have detected a huge reservoir of salt-free freshwater hiding underneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the University of Utah deployed a helicopter to carry out an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey of part of the lake, covering parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/exhibits.lib.utah.edu\/s\/salinestories\/page\/farmington-bay\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Farmington Bay<\/a> area along the south-eastern edge of the water.<\/p>\n<p>An AEM survey does two jobs: It detects electrical conductivity, which helps differentiate saltwater from freshwater, and it examines rock composition. That means the data can potentially show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-staggering-quarter-of-all-freshwater-life-on-earth-is-going-missing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">where freshwater is<\/a>, and how deep it goes.<\/p>\n<p>The team found that in the surveyed region, there&#8217;s a sudden and substantial drop in the depth of underlying bedrock below the Great Salt Lake, leaving a massive space for sand and silt to fill \u2013 sediment that appears to be saturated with freshwater.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were able to answer the question of how deep this potential reservoir is, and what its spatial extent is beneath the eastern lake margin,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/attheu.utah.edu\/research\/freshwater-under-great-salt-lake-playa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> geophysicist Michael Zhdanov.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you know how deep, you know how wide, you know the porous space, you can calculate the potential freshwater volume.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/HelicopterSensor.jpg\" alt=\"Helicopter survey\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"wp-image-195918 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The survey helicopter and its scanning equipment. (Brian Maffly\/University of Utah)<\/p>\n<p>The researchers estimate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-vast-reservoir-of-fresh-water-hidden-off-the-us-coast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the freshwater reservoir<\/a> could extend down between 3 and 4 kilometers (up to almost 2.5 miles), though a full survey of the entire Great Salt Lake will be needed to make sure \u2013 only a small area of it was scanned here.<\/p>\n<p>It <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jhydrol.2025.134813\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was already suspected<\/a> that there might be freshwater lurking underneath the Great Salt Lake \u2013 in part due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/attheu.utah.edu\/feature\/great-salt-lakes-mystery-islands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reed-covered islands<\/a> that have been popping up across the basin \u2013 but this is the first time that researchers have seriously tried to assess how big the freshwater reservoir might be.<\/p>\n<p>And while the presence of freshwater wasn&#8217;t a surprise, the potential coverage area was. The reservoir discovered by the AEM survey showed the sediment-holding bedrock &#8216;bowl&#8217; extending further into the center of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endorheic_basin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Farmington Bay playa<\/a> than expected.<\/p>\n<p>Some freshwater would be expected at the margins of the Great Salt Lake, as it feeds down from the surrounding mountains, but the data points to there being a lot more across the approximate 2,500 square kilometers (950 square miles) extent of the lake.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unexpected part of this wasn&#8217;t the salt lens that we see near the surface across the playa,&#8221; Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcw.org\/show\/cool-science-radio\/2026-02-19\/cool-science-radio-february-19-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> on Utah radio station KPCW&#8217;s Cool Science Radio show recently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s that the freshwater underneath it extends so far in towards the interior of the lake and possibly under the entire lake. We don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, the researchers think this water could be useful: As the waters of the Great Salt Lake have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-great-salt-lake-could-vanish-within-just-5-years-scientists-warn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued to evaporate<\/a>, pollution from the remaining dust has become more and more of a problem for the health of surrounding communities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/FarmingtonBay.jpg\" alt=\"Survey area\" width=\"642\" height=\"533\" class=\"wp-image-195919 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Only a small section of the lake was surveyed. (Zhdanov et al., Sci. Rep., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>This dust is regularly blowing into the urban areas of Utah, and taking toxic metals along with it. Some damping down with freshwater may help to mitigate that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are beneficial effects of this groundwater that we need to understand before we go extracting more of it,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/attheu.utah.edu\/research\/freshwater-under-great-salt-lake-playa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> hydrologist Bill Johnson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A first-order objective is to understand whether we could use this freshwater to wet dust hotspots and douse them in a meaningful way without perturbing the freshwater system too much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers are already busy trying to get funding to spread out the scope of the AEM survey and analyze more of the lake.
