{"id":67769,"date":"2025-07-16T17:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67769\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T17:55:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T17:55:12","slug":"former-migrant-shelter-in-nyc-to-become-apartments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67769\/","title":{"rendered":"Former migrant shelter in NYC to become apartments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former hotel that once catered to tourists \u2014 and more recently to asylum seekers \u2014 is now preparing for a more permanent kind of guest.<\/p>\n<p>The Watson Hotel, a 19-story, two-tower property at 440 W. 57th St. in Hell\u2019s Kitchen, is slated for a full-scale residential conversion, according to a recent filing with the Department of Buildings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yellowstone Real Estate Investments, which acquired the 600-room hotel for $175 million in 2021, plans to transform it into 249 apartments \u2014 complete with an indoor pool, a rooftop terrace, a gaming room, a pet playroom and a cellar-level parking garage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/real-estate\/yellowstone-real-estate-investments-plans-convert-watson-hotel-residential-housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crain\u2019s<\/a> first reported.\u00a0Many other details are not yet known.<\/p>\n<p>The Watson Hotel in Hell\u2019s Kitchen, once used as a temporary migrant shelter, is slated for conversion into a 249-unit residential building. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n<p>The property, which opened in 1964 as a Holiday Inn, was rebranded as the Watson in 2017 and remained popular until the pandemic forced a citywide hospitality slump.<\/p>\n<p>During the COVID-era emergency and amid a surge of migrants arriving in New York City, the hotel was repurposed by the Adams administration as a temporary humanitarian relief center.<\/p>\n<p>Developer Yellowstone Real Estate Investments, which bought the two-towered property at 440 W. 57th St. for $175 million in 2021, filed plans with the city to transform the former 600-room hotel into apartments ranging from six to 15 per floor across both wings.
