It was Alabama&#8217;s sixth championship under Saban since 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"7\">Junior offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor said Wednesday the Crimson Tide players have endured a painful wait to reach the standard set by Saban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"8\">\u201cFor the whole team honestly we obviously know that we haven\u2019t won a championship in a long time,\u201d Proctor said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s everybody\u2019s goal at the end of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">Included in Alabama&#8217;s 9-4 season under DeBoer was a 5-3 SEC mark that included road losses at Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Alabama was No. 17 in the final <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ap-top-25-college-football-poll\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AP Top 25<\/a> following a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/reliaquest-bowl-alabama-michigan-score-6e25a48317bbe362aec6a885afe2d528?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">19-13 loss to Michigan<\/a> in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"12\">DeBoer, who coached the 2023 Washington team to the national championship game, says added familiarity and continuity on his staff are reasons to expect improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"13\">Defensive lineman Tim Keenan said another reason the Crimson Tide will be better is players believe in DeBoer. Keenan hinted the shadow of Saban followed DeBoer in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"14\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely changed,&#8221; Keenan said. \u201cYou definitely see guys definitely bought in. If they\u2019re not here, no knock to them, but everyone who is here now, they believe in the system. They believe in Coach DeBoer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"15\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alabama-crimson-tide-d28bac7ec5034e7a3dc3284bd1cf7007?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Grubb<\/a>, who worked on DeBoer&#8217;s staff at Washington, was hired as Alabama&#8217;s offensive coordinator after one season with the Seattle Seahawks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">Keenan said he respects DeBoer for having the confidence to follow Saban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"19\">\u201cI know a lot of people say they want to do that, but they ain\u2019t got the courage enough to do it,\u201d Keenan said. &#8220;So I\u2019m gonna go hard for my coach, always.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"20\">\u201cJust, you know it\u2019s Coach Saban, like the greatest coach of all time. The GOAT. You know, greatest of all time. So to take that responsibility, saying. \u2018I\u2019m going to take over for him now.\u2019 &#8230; I believe in him. And also, I know that God was going to put the right person in the right place at the right time, and he\u2019s in the right place at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"21\">DeBoer said Alabama \u201cfell short\u201d last season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"22\">\u201cWe&#8217;ve got to be better in the big moments,\u201d DeBoer said. &#8220;We lost some close games last year. We had chances maybe not even in the fourth quarter, but early in the game to separate ourselves or make a play here or there. Whether it was the belief or whether it was the confidence, a lot of that just comes through repetitions. We really had a great offseason understanding where we fell short, why we fell short.
