The move is official, Milwaukee announced in a press release (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bucks\/status\/2036242236887724200\" rel=\"nofollow\">Twitter link<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-466174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cam-Thomas-vert-scaled-e1772249176321-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\"  \/>As we noted in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2026\/03\/bucks-promote-pete-nance-to-multiyear-standard-deal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a separate story<\/a>, Thomas was cut loose because the Bucks wanted to promote <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nancepe01.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.hoopsrumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-03-23_bbr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pete Nance<\/a><\/strong>, who was signed to a multiyear standard contract. Nance was previously on a two-way deal.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a surprising development, since Milwaukee targeted Thomas immediately after the trade deadline. However, he was on a minimum-salary contract that only covered the rest of the season, so he makes sense as an odd man out if he isn\u2019t part of the team\u2019s plans beyond 2025\/26.<\/p>\n<p>According to Charania (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ShamsCharania\/status\/2036241783382798631\" rel=\"nofollow\">Twitter link<\/a>), general manager <strong>Jon Horst<\/strong> pitched Thomas on the idea of being a key part of the Bucks\u2019 present and future, and head coach <strong>Doc Rivers<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoopsrumors.com\/2026\/02\/central-notes-thomas-rivers-harden-cavs-t-smith.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">compared<\/a> the high-scoring guard to a couple of Sixth Man of the Year winners he coached earlier in his career (<strong>Jamal Crawford<\/strong> and <strong>Lou Williams<\/strong>) shortly after the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>While this hasn\u2019t been confirmed, it\u2019s possible that Thomas may have been the one who sought a change of scenery. The 24-year-old had been playing fewer minutes (16.6 per game) with the Bucks than he was with the Nets (24.3 MPG) and received a pair of DNP-CDs last week. Thomas asked Brooklyn to waive him last month.<\/p>\n<p>In 18 games with the Bucks, Thomas averaged 10.6 PPG, 1.9 APG and 1.6 RPG on .431\/.275\/.754. The former first-round pick is a notoriously subpar defender and also struggled with turnovers in Milwaukee (1.4 per game).<\/p>\n<p>The Bucks will carry a dead-money cap hit of $844,607 if Thomas clears waivers in a couple days. Thomas would be a free agent at that point, but he won\u2019t be eligible to compete in the playoffs because he was released after March 1, notes Keith Smith of Spotrac (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KeithSmithNBA\/status\/2036243133780857139\" rel=\"nofollow\">via Twitter<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If Thomas is claimed on the waiver wire, his cap charge would transfer to the team that adds him and Milwaukee would no longer carry his salary on its books.
