{"id":67859,"date":"2025-07-16T18:42:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T18:42:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67859\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T18:42:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T18:42:11","slug":"flesh-eating-bacteria-kills-4-what-is-vibrio-vulnificus-whio-tv-7-and-whio-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67859\/","title":{"rendered":"Flesh-eating bacteria kills 4; what is Vibrio vulnificus \u2013 WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Four people in Florida have died after they contracted flesh-eating bacteria this year, according to the state\u2019s health department. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\">The agency<\/a> said there was one fatal case in each of the following counties: Bay County, Broward County, Hillsborough County, and St. John\u2019s County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Overall, there have been 11 cases in the state this year, according to the most recent data. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Last year, there were 82 cases with 19 deaths, with the increase in cases in about half a dozen counties when compared to previous years attributed to Hurricane Helene, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\">health department<\/a> said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that lives in warm seawater and requires salt to live. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">It is naturally occurring in warm, brackish water, but infections are rare. <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\">The Cleveland Clinic<\/a> said that there are only 100 to 200 cases annually in the U.S. Most occur from May until October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\">Health officials<\/a> said you should not go into water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes, adding that if you are immunocompromised, you should wear foot protection to prevent injuries caused by rocks and shells on the beach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vibrio\/about\/index.html#cdc_disease_basics_symptoms-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vibrio\/about\/index.html#cdc_disease_basics_symptoms-symptoms\">CDC<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\">Cleveland Clinc<\/a> said symptoms of a Vibrio wound infection include: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Chills<\/li>\n<li>Redness<\/li>\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n<li>Swelling<\/li>\n<li>Large, discolored or painful blisters<\/li>\n<li>Warmth<\/li>\n<li>Discoloration<\/li>\n<li>Fluid leakage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24884-vibrio-vulnificus\">The Cleveland Clinic<\/a> said the infection can get worse quickly and if you suspect a Vibrio vulnificus infection, you should go to an emergency room immediately. It can be fatal if left untreated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Complications from Vibrio vulnificus include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thrombocytopenia<\/li>\n<li>Internal bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Sepsis<\/li>\n<li>Septic shock<\/li>\n<li>Necrotizing fasciitis<\/li>\n<li>Organ damage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 lofITx body-paragraph\">Vibrio wound infections are treated with antibiotics and surgery to remove dead or infected tissue.
