U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are now stationed at Philadelphia International Airport to support the Transportation Security Administration amid staffing shortages triggered by the partial government shutdown.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

At a press conference at the airport on Tuesday, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner warned ICE agents to \u201cuphold the United States Constitution, uphold the laws.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cICE, play nice,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

Krasner said he will prosecute ICE agents who commit crimes within his jurisdiction.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is how it works. No, I don\u2019t take a phone call from the president saying, \u2018Let him go.\u2019 No, the president cannot pardon you,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n

The district attorney told agents that U.S. Vice President JD Vance\u2019s statement<\/a> in January that the officer who shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis was \u201cprotected by absolute immunity\u201d is not accurate. Krasner warned agents not to break the law.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI will put you in handcuffs, and I will put you in a courtroom, and, if necessary, I will put you in a jail cell if you decide to make the terrazzo floor of this airport anything like what you did in the streets of Minneapolis, which involved the criminal homicide of unarmed, innocent people,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n

Krasner said his message to immigrant residents is that the U.S. Constitution applies to them \u201calmost as much as it applies to a U.S. citizen.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is part of my job to uphold the law and Constitution of the United States and to protect everyone whom it protects. It protects you. So please know that I am here to protect everyone, including every immigrant who may wish to come here and may wish to travel or do whatever else they\u2019re going to do,\u201d he said.

Travelers at the airport on Tuesday afternoon had mixed reactions to the presence of ICE agents.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hoping that the TSA employees can get paid quickly to return to the job that they do so well,\u201d said Lisa Turner, 54, a Philadelphia resident who was traveling to visit a friend in Denver, Colorado.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just telling my daughter what an incredible job the TSA officers do at the Philadelphia Airport. They are the right kind of grumpy, which is Philly efficiency,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd it\u2019s kind of the best of our city. So I really want them to get paid so that we could return to systems as normal.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

According to TSA, 10.93% of TSA agents called out nationwide Monday. PHL airport saw 19.7% of its TSA agents call out that same day.\n<\/p>\n

At PHL airport on Tuesday afternoon, the security wait time was less than 10 minutes<\/a> at all terminals.\n<\/p>\n

Martin Jedlicka, 65, a film director trying to get home to Salt Lake City, Utah, rebooked his flight and took an Amtrak to Philadelphia after facing three cancelled flights and a TSA wait time in excess of four hours at LaGuardia Airport in New York, following a deadly collision<\/a> on the runway that left two people dead.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI think right now we have a dysfunctional, completely dysfunctional system, and I blame the incompetence of Sean Duffy at the [Federal Aviation Administration],\u201d Jedlicka said. \u201cHe\u2019s an idiot, and the deployment of ICE goons is pure political theater. They do nothing. All they do is just harass people and look for reasons to be violent. And my heart goes out to the poor TSA people who are caught in this sort of political theater.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Some travelers said ICE agents were providing welcome support.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, help is needed,\u201d said Bill Karbon, 65, of Hamilton, New Jersey. \u201cWhatever ICE can do to help alleviate the lines, I\u2019m all for it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Karbon said the shutdown is \u201cvery frustrating.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
