{"id":67980,"date":"2025-07-16T19:50:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-16T19:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67980\/"},"modified":"2025-07-16T19:50:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T19:50:09","slug":"after-record-breaking-season-great-lakes-piping-plover-moms-head-to-southern-islands-and-leave-dad-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/67980\/","title":{"rendered":"After record-breaking season, Great Lakes piping plover moms head to southern islands and leave dad behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Z36ISZKPFBD5ZJK7VY6EPM2HPE\">EMPIRE, MI &#8212; It\u2019s the start of a moms-only vacation for the Piping Plovers leaving their nests within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IL2JSEYTCVHDZBWTROYW4B6KIQ\">July marks the time of year when piping plover chicks start to fledge and the adults start to \u201cget antsy for migration,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatlakespipingplover.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O4RZRNQTZFAQVLMJBXDH77VM24\">The team monitored 82 pairs of Great Lakes piping plovers this season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/great-lakes-piping-plovers-break-record-for-nesting-pairs-again.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/great-lakes-piping-plovers-break-record-for-nesting-pairs-again.html\">another new record <\/a>for the fluffy chicks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BZDXPVE4SZCTJGVMM7U5M3UL3A\">Piping Plover females are the first to leave the Great Lakes and head south to their wintering site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VWM2226L65FI7PAYGECTQPLMGA\">Sleeping Bear\u2019s darling Gabby, or Of,gb:X,Y, already packed her bags and set off. She and her girlfriends are leaving their male partners behind to father the fledglings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WEPVYH4P4NH4LEJH4FFQE2NQKM\">By the end of August the males and most of the chicks will also migrate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6M5WXGVTDNDO7A4YCSVXWBTXYI\">Gabby,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/07\/oldest-great-lakes-piping-plover-has-2-chicks-this-season-at-sleeping-bear.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/07\/oldest-great-lakes-piping-plover-has-2-chicks-this-season-at-sleeping-bear.html\"> had two chicks make it to fledgling age<\/a> this season. She is a mother to 37 plovers. Gabby is widely known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/04\/oldest-great-lakes-piping-plover-returns-to-sleeping-bear-dunes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/life\/2025\/04\/oldest-great-lakes-piping-plover-returns-to-sleeping-bear-dunes.html\">oldest shorebird ever recorded<\/a> for this endangered piping plover population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TFFU6VOMS5E2VBY54NFDLDJFHU\">Gabby was seen on July 1 in a location south of her usual nesting site. The conservation team said she often makes a foraging pit stop before heading further south to her favorite winter home at Cumberland Island, Georgia, according to the conservation team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SFXFMMSMXBHJXJBRWACLAFX37Q\">Fellow Sleeping Bear plovers have followed suit in the following weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ILCB6TDYMBGUBLW53OGB2R5TPM\">The conservation team received reports of one plover in Anclote Key, Florida. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XOD3S3CFRFFF5JALMI2V4XLK5A\">\u201cShe had a rough season this year where she nested at the North Manitou Island Dock and lost her first clutch to coyote egg depredation and her second clutch came into captive-rearing,\u201d the conservation team wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J35BFFIBHJB43BMGPWVSDOABVU\">The other female from Sleeping Bear was spotted in Fort Pulaski, Georgia. She, too, typically prefers Cumberland Island for her non-breeding season. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WA2IDOV5ONEAHMPS3XENMF3WQY\">\u201cShe is likely taking a foraging pitstop in Fort Pulaski before heading a bit further south. Of,Rb:X,L had a successful season, fledgling all four of her chicks at the Platte Point area of Sleeping Bear Dunes,\u201d according to the conservation team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ATN346YKEBAQPIS2VYXQVT7N5I\">As more mommas head south the conservation team welcomes the postcards.
