{"id":681900,"date":"2026-03-26T00:17:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/681900\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T00:17:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:17:13","slug":"new-scholarship-honors-san-antonio-teen-after-cancer-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/681900\/","title":{"rendered":"New scholarship honors San Antonio teen after cancer death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 A San Antonio family is honoring their daughter\u2019s life and legacy by creating a scholarship in her name after she died from cancer at 18.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Victoria Camarillo, who was born with Williams syndrome, an intellectual disability, was known by family and friends for her determination, compassion and ability to inspire others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cShe\u2019s probably done more in her 18 years than I have in my 55 years,\u201d her father, Carlos Camarillo, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite the challenges she faced, Victoria approached life with what her family described as a \u201cprove them wrong\u201d mindset. She learned how to play the drums, made the National Honor Society at Clark High School, won gold at the Special Olympics, and was crowned the 2019 Fiesta Especial queen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Her time as queen also reflected her commitment to helping others. Victoria supported an organization that uplifts children with cancer \u2014 a cause that would later become deeply personal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSeveral years later, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and that\u2019s what she ended up passing away from,\u201d her father said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Victoria died in 2024, just six days after her 18th birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Even after her death, her father said her impact continues to be felt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou\u2019re still doing it \u2014 you\u2019re still moving so many people, you\u2019re still inspiring,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to make sure that Mom and Dad keep that legacy going for you forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Victoria had planned to attend Texas A&amp;M University-San Antonio\u2019s Transition University program for students with intellectual disabilities.
