{"id":681930,"date":"2026-03-26T00:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/681930\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T00:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T00:32:13","slug":"mamdani-administration-identifies-first-budget-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/681930\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani administration identifies first budget cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mamdani administration, for the first time, identified actual spending cuts in an effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2026\/02\/17\/zohran-mamdani-kathy-hochul-tax-hike-on-wealthy-property-taxes-budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">balance the budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s a small fraction of the cuts needed and would still leave the city with a nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2026\/02\/12\/mamdani-says-city-budget-crisis-isn-t-as-bad-as-initially-thought\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$5.4 billion budget deficit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>What You Need To Know<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mamdani administration identified $1.7 billion in potential cuts<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>A fraction\u00a0\u2014 more than $200 million\u00a0\u2014 was publicly identified as approved cuts<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Even with the cuts, the city still has to close a $5.4 billion budget gap<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the process of going through those reports, and we\u2019ve shared publicly a number of the recommendations they put forward that we\u2019ve already approved,\u201d Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at an affordable housing event in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani had tasked agency leaders to pick chief savings officers to identify ways to spend less. They found $1.7 billion in potential savings.<\/p>\n<p>But his budget team only publicly identified more than $200 million worth of cuts that had been approved. Even if all cuts were approved, the city\u2019s budget gap of $5.4 billion would remain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat $1.7 billion in savings is already built into how we get down to the $5.4 billion, and we\u2019re confident in being able to deliver exactly that,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p>While Mamdani was in Brooklyn to discuss building affordable housing at a faster pace, his budget chief, <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/inside-city-hall\/2026\/02\/18\/dean-fuleihan-sherif-soliman-zohran-mamdani-budget-proposal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sherif Soliman<\/a>, was deep in the numbers at a City Council budget hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least 200 million has been identified as viable savings we can book,\u201d he told the Council. \u201cAnd the process continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biggest savings approved \u2014\u00a0$100 million cut by kicking ineligible dependants off public employee health plans.
