{"id":682887,"date":"2026-03-26T10:11:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/682887\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T10:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:11:14","slug":"there-are-10-signs-of-faster-aging-hidden-in-your-blood-study-says-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/682887\/","title":{"rendered":"There Are 10 Signs of Faster Aging Hidden in Your Blood, Study Says : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While we all celebrate our birthdays every 12 months (our chronological age), it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-brain-looks-older-when-youve-slept-poorly-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">doesn&#8217;t always match up<\/a> with the rate at which our bodies are wearing out (our biological age).<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have now identified 10 different blood markers that can help spot the difference.<\/p>\n<p>We already have multiple ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/human-aging-two-sharp-peaks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">measure biological age<\/a>, but there&#8217;s a need to develop tests that are even more reliable and simpler to run. A blood test looking for specific biomarkers would fit that description.<\/p>\n<p>This work was led by a team from the University of Konstanz in Germany, and the hope is that the new blood-scanning technique could help improve our understanding of biological aging, as well as act as a warning system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-bodys-secret-age-reveals-more-about-dementia-risk-than-your-birthday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for age-related disease risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The biological aging process is very complex,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alphagalileo.org\/en-gb\/Item-Display\/ItemId\/270487?returnurl=https:\/\/www.alphagalileo.org\/en-gb\/Item-Display\/ItemId\/270487\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> biologist Maria Moreno-Villanueva from the University of Konstanz.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It affects all of the body&#8217;s tissues and organs, and it is not the result of a single cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result, single biomarkers are not enough to reliably determine a person&#8217;s biological age. On top of this, there are also differences in how men and women age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers started by measuring 362 different parameters in the blood samples of 3,300 people, aged between 35 and 74. They used statistical modeling and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/artificial-intelligence\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73092\" data-postid=\"195762\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">machine learning<\/a> to reduce these biomarkers down to the 10 most important \u2013 with separate lists of 10 chosen for males and for females.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/BioageChart.jpg\" alt=\"Bioage chart\" width=\"642\" height=\"347\" class=\"wp-image-195765 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The researchers developed biomarkers for females (left) and males (right). (Moreno-Villanueva et al., Aging Cell, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>This filtering was done by comparing each of the biomarkers \u2013 which covered chemical, genetic, cellular, and molecular signaling \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/people-who-live-to-100-have-a-unique-relationship-with-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">against chronological age<\/a>. The combinations that predicted age most closely were picked.<\/p>\n<p>That gave the researchers a blend of predictors showing what someone&#8217;s blood tends to look like at certain chronological ages. When someone&#8217;s blood &#8216;age rating&#8217; misses the mark of their actual age, that&#8217;s an indicator of slower or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/extreme-heat-can-accelerate-aging-new-research-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faster biological aging<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To evaluate the accuracy of the biomarkers, the researchers ran their blood tests on groups of people already known to age faster or slower in biological terms: people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/woman-with-down-syndrome-had-alzheimers-without-dementia-in-surprise-case\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with Down Syndrome<\/a> (also known by its genetic name of trisomy 21), smokers, and women on hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The blood tests picked out the expected changes in biological aging \u2013 either faster or slower \u2013 showing that the identified biomarkers were being interpreted correctly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Against the backdrop of current research on the aging effects of smoking, hormone replacement therapy, or trisomy 21, all of these results are plausible and confirm the validity of our bioage score,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alphagalileo.org\/en-gb\/Item-Display\/ItemId\/270487?returnurl=https:\/\/www.alphagalileo.org\/en-gb\/Item-Display\/ItemId\/270487\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> molecular toxicologist Alexander B\u00fcrkle, from the University of Konstanz.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another interesting finding from the study is that certain biomarkers from those selected seem to contribute to biological aging (described as the &#8220;drivers&#8221;) while others are only indicators of it (the &#8220;bystanders&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>That potentially gives experts more insight into someone&#8217;s health from a blood test.
