Experts say there\u2019s no reason to panic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to the American Meteor Society, what people saw was a meteor, a piece of space material entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere at extremely high speed. If any part of that object survives the fall to the ground, it\u2019s then classified as a meteorite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>WHAT IS A METEORITE?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Elizabeth Bailey, an assistant professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UTSA, explains that meteorites are fragments of rock or metal left over from the formation of the solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As a meteor enters Earth\u2019s atmosphere, it encounters intense air resistance and friction, causing it to heat up rapidly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhen a meteor goes through the atmosphere, it starts to heat up from friction with the air,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThat can make it break apart, shrink down, melt away or even vaporize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That process often causes the meteor to break apart high above the ground, producing the bright flash and loud sound many people reported hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s entering the atmosphere really fast, at a supersonic or hypersonic velocity,\u201d Bailey said, \u201cand that\u2019s where that sonic boom comes from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Texas meteor wasn\u2019t the only sighting reported recently. Since Feb. 9, there have been about 10 meteor sightings across the United States, including reports over Ohio, California and Michigan in the past week alone.<\/p>\n<p>In the past month, there have been close to 10 meteorite sightings around the country. (Copyright 2026 by KSAT &#8211; All rights reserved.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite the timing, Bailey says these events are not related and are not part of an active meteor shower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"> \u201cA lot of people think there\u2019s an increase or some kind of pattern,\u201d Bailey said, \u201cbut it\u2019s really pretty random where and when meteorites land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Scientists also say meteorites are falling to Earth every single day \u2014 the difference now is visibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhat\u2019s really changed is the amount of video footage and how easy it is to share it on social media,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">With more doorbell cameras, dash cams and smartphones capturing the sky, more of these rare-looking events are being recorded and widely shared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>IS THERE ANY RISK OR DANGER?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Most meteors burn up high above Earth as they enter the atmosphere.
