{"id":68477,"date":"2025-07-17T00:11:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T00:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/68477\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T00:11:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T00:11:15","slug":"replacement-for-demolished-southside-community-center-planned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/68477\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacement for demolished Southside community center planned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>City officials have released plans showing how they plan to rebuild the Father Manuel Roman Community Center in a Southside neighborhood as part of a review process.<\/p>\n<p>The Historic and Design Review Commission issued a conceptual approval for a new 11,900-square foot building at Villa Coronado Park, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/father-roman-community-center-villa-coronado-southside-neighborhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">original community center<\/a> was closed in October 2023 due to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/father-roman-community-center-south-side-structural-assessment-result\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">structural issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Olivier, a public relations manager for the city\u2019s Public Works Department, said construction could begin in fall 2025 after city staff prepares for permitting and finalize other documentation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/scott-stephen-ball_father-manuel-roman-community-center-6-17-2024836.jpg\" alt=\"The Father Roman Community Center in San Antonio's Southside will be razed and reconstructed.\" class=\"wp-image-5372496\"  \/>The Father Manuel Roman Community Center at Villa Coronado Park on San Antonio\u2019s South Side will be razed and reconstructed.  Credit: Scott Ball \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>The City of San Antonio <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/san-antonio-to-replace-father-roman-community-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">committed $12 million<\/a> to replacing the building in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The new community center will feature a gymnasium with a basketball court, classroom spaces, a kitchenette, storage, restrooms and maintenance areas<strong> <\/strong>in the far Southside park.<\/p>\n<p>According to city documents, the new building will be built around the site of the previous building to minimize disturbances to the park.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There will also be a public art<strong> <\/strong>component,<strong> <\/strong>after demolition of the previous building resulted in the removal of a well-known mural on the building\u2019s east facade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Brenda-Bazan-father-roman-community-center.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5410606\"  \/>Children play outside the previous Father Manuel Roman Community Center on in March 2024.
