Three other deaths have also been reported in Manatee and Hillsborough Counties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">There have currently been 11 cases reported as of July 11, 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to FDOH, Vibrio vulnificusis a bacterium that normally lives in warm seawater and is part of a group of vibrios that are called \u201chalophilic\u201d because they require salt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">People can be infected with the bacterium when they eat raw shellfish, particularly oysters. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/diseases-and-conditions\/vibrio-infections\/vibrio-vulnificus\/index.html\">bacterium<\/a> is frequently isolated from oysters and other shellfish in warm coastal waters during the summer months. People with open wounds can also be exposed to the bacterium through direct contact with seawater. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to FDOH, the bacterium can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">To prevent infection: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Do not eat raw oysters or other raw shellfish.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Cook shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) thoroughly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>For shellfish in the shell, either a) boil until the shells open and continue boiling for 5 more minutes, or b) steam until the shells open and then continue cooking for 9 more minutes. Do not eat those shellfish that do not open during cooking.
