{"id":686409,"date":"2026-03-27T21:34:20","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T21:34:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/686409\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T21:34:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T21:34:20","slug":"benjamin-hall-design-creates-masonry-adu-in-arizona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/686409\/","title":{"rendered":"Benjamin Hall Design creates masonry ADU in Arizona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio Benjamin Hall Design has attached an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/accessory-dwelling-units\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">accessory dwelling unit<\/a>\u00a0made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/concrete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">concrete<\/a> block to an existing house to accommodate a multi-generational family in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/phoenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Phoenix<\/a>, Arizona, USA.<\/p>\n<p>Known as Moon Valley Residence, the 1,756-square-foot (163-square-metre) dwelling was designed to intentionally contrast the original 1970s suburban main home, set in a golf community that looks eastward to a rock formation called Lookout Mountain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310223 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/moon-valley-residence-phoenix-arizona-benjamin-hall-design_dezeen_2364_col_35-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Valley Residence\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Benjamin Hall Design has created a concrete block ADU in Phoenix<\/p>\n<p>Completed in 2025, the ADU shares an access door with the main house, but maintains self-sufficiency and privacy both spatially and from the curved wall that shields the dwelling from the cul-de-sac.<\/p>\n<p>Constructed with grey concrete masonry units (CMU) as both the exterior and interior finished material, the accessory dwelling unit (ADU) draws inspiration from studio founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjaminhalldesign.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Hall<\/a>&#8216;s childhood memories of travelling through the Southwest US with his father.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310218 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/moon-valley-residence-phoenix-arizona-benjamin-hall-design_dezeen_2364_col_30-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Valley Residence\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It is made of grey concrete masonry units<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We explored the ancient Native American ruins called Montezuma Castle \u2013 this experience subconsciously embedded itself into my thinking of this project,&#8221; the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjaminhalldesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Benjamin Hall Design<\/a> told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was used as a reference on scale, stacking forms and how to mitigate the desert&#8217;s natural heat and light by undulating mass and aperture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/moon-valley-residence-phoenix-arizona-benjamin-hall-design_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Valley Residence by Benjamin Hall Design\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It contains a connection to the property&#8217;s main 1970s home<\/p>\n<p>Set lower than the profile of the main house, the ADU is composed of four volumes with apertures strategically carved out to curate views of the surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These four rectilinear volumes each identify themselves at different elevations,&#8221; he said. &#8220;On the interior you can feel the scale \u2013 compression and release \u2013 of each of the volumes and their relationship with the body and program of the space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310219 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/moon-valley-residence-phoenix-arizona-benjamin-hall-design_dezeen_2364_col_31-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Valley Residence\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The house is made of four interlocking volumes<\/p>\n<p>This passes to the second volume, containing a living room and kitchen with a view of Lookout Mountain. A glazed interstitial volume leads to the sleeping quarters with a guest suite and a primary suite with another private patio.<\/p>\n<p>The first volume connects the ADU to the main house via a wedge-shaped dining space with sliding glass doors that open to a private patio.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/02\/20\/desert-fairway-residence-kendle-design-collaborative\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/sq-desert-fairway-residence-kendle-design-collaborative_dezeen_2364_col_1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Desert Fairway Residence in Arizona by Kendle Design Collaborative\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Rammed earth adds natural quality to Arizona home by Kendle Design Collaborative\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The layout allows a retired couple to age in place privately while directly connected to their children and grandchildren who occupy the main house.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to strategic spans that allowed for self-supporting masonry ceilings, the continuous material of the CMU block required all of the utilities to be contained within built-in millwork.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2310214 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/moon-valley-residence-phoenix-arizona-benjamin-hall-design_dezeen_2364_col_26-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Moon Valley Residence by Benjamin Hall Design\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It allows a retired couple to age privately while remaining connected to their family<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The integration of utilities is carefully moulded into the cohesive strategy that embeds itself into the thickness of masonry and the mailability of concrete,&#8221;
