(ABC News: Kelsey Reid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Chief executive Samuel McSkimming said mining supplies, containerised freight and chemicals had all been affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But he said fuel imports had not been impacted, nor had iron ore and LNG exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said while it was not uncommon for facilities to be damaged after a cyclone, the degree of the impact was &#8220;unusual&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We are expecting a substantial impact on operations,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was not known when operations would resume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Port of Ashburton, near Onslow \u2014 home to iron ore and liquefied natural gas exports \u2014 will remain closed until it is safe for teams to inspect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cape Preston West and Varanus Island ports are also closed.<\/p>\n<p>Gas supply issues &#8216;bad timing&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government said it was working to ensure a consistent domestic gas supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It comes as countries around the globe brace for a shortage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), while <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-06\/power-bills-iran-middle-east-war-compared-to-ukraine-2022\/106417584\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106417584\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the conflict in the Middle East<\/a> drags on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s certainly bad timing from that point of view,&#8221; said independent gas analyst Jeanette Roberts.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;When you look at the cost of living and fuel prices, the impact of the triple whammy could be really quite significant.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Facilities still offline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before it was downgraded to a tropical low early this morning, ex-tropical Cyclone Narelle <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-27\/tropical-cyclone-narelle-continues-destructive-path-exmouth-\/106497578\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106497578\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carved a path through<\/a> much of Australia&#8217;s most productive energy infrastructure, intensifying to category four strength on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A satellite image of a cyclone with a well-defined eye and a large swirl of clouds.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/88958f056fd2541c453af48f4b73b981.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The system captured by satellite over the WA coast on Thursday. (Supplied: Wheatstone)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, Woodside suffered a &#8220;production interruption&#8221; at its Karratha Gas Plant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The plant is responsible for processing gas from the company&#8217;s enormous North West Shelf project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Production at the North West Shelf Project is expected to recommence after Woodside is able to mobilise its workforce to its offshore facilities,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Close up of a collection of jagged red rocks. (ABC News: Charlie Mclean)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Santos operates a gas facility of its own at Varanus Island, 75 kilometres off the Pilbara coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The island bore the brunt of winds reaching 180 kilometres per hour early Thursday evening, causing the plant to trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Once weather conditions have abated and personnel can safely re-enter the plant, we&#8217;ll return to normal operations,&#8221; a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;No need to panic&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Energy and climate journalist Peter Milne described the situation as &#8220;a big deal&#8221; but cautioned against panic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s going to take some time for the weather to calm down so the workers can get out there, fly offshore to the platforms, inspect them, make sure everything&#8217;s okay, and fire them up again,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The unknown is how long that will take.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Milne said there would still be reserves in the Dampier-Bunbury gas pipeline as well as in underground storage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Gas is a pretty important fuel for our power mix in the Southwest, and that definitely will not be touched \u2014 the government will make sure of that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Industry likely to be impacted first<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Roberts said the flow of LNG to WA had been interrupted before and its repercussions had been widespread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2008, an explosion on Varanus Island, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2012-05-24\/varanus-gas-explosion-report-released\/4031146\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/4031146\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">then owned by Apache Energy,<\/a> shut down almost a third of the state&#8217;s domestic supply for two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That was a major issue and major damage,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was obviously impact on users in the Pilbara, people like BHP and Rio and Burrup fertilisers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But also 150 small businesses reported impacts as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-27\/tropical-cyclone-narelle-continues-destructive-path-exmouth-\/106497578\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cyclone Narelle continues destructive path<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle continues to cut a destructive swathe through Western Australia&#8217;s Gascoyne even as it weakens, with authorities warning the extreme weather is not over yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ABC approached multiple gas-generated power plants in WA&#8217;s south for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">RATCH Australia, which operates the gas-fired Kemerton power station near Bunbury, said it was not anticipating any material disruptions but was &#8220;monitoring the situation carefully&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic supply &#8216;consistent&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">WA Energy Minister Amber Jade Sanderson said she was not aware of the damage when asked at a press conference yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[The plants] operate in a cyclone region, they are well prepared, and there&#8217;s no disruption to domestic gas supply,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up of Amber-Jade Sanderson looking ahead and speaking.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/af54c1d29d216c75f79d5d7b87a5f4ce.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">WA Energy Minister Amber Jade Sanderson said there had not been a disruption to domestic gas supply thus far.
