Federal authorities took him into custody earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security said.\u00a0 (Getty Images; Department of Homeland Security)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;New York sanctuary politicians chose to release this Latin Kings gang member from jail back not New York City communities,&#8221; said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said. &#8220;This gang member was previously arrested for assault on a first responder and family neglect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>ICE agents arrested Leon on March 4 during immigration enforcement operations in New York City. He remains in ICE custody pending deportation proceedings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leon first illegally entered the United States\u00a0around\u00a0Nov. 11,\u00a02022\u00a0through the southern border and was released into the country by the Biden administration.\u00a0He was issued a\u00a0final order of removal by a judge on Feb. 27, 2025.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/mask-free-ice-agents-begin-patrolling-us-airports-trump-floats-national-guard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>MASK-FREE ICE AGENTS BEGIN PATROLLING US AIRPORTS; TRUMP FLOATS NATIONAL GUARD<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;Not only was\u00a0this illegal alien released by the Biden administration,\u00a0but he was also released again by\u00a0New York\u2019s sanctuary politicians,&#8221; said Bis. &#8220;Enough is enough.\u00a0Sanctuary politicians must stop releasing criminal illegal aliens back into our communities to perpetrate more crimes.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Upon taking office in January, New York Mayor Zorhan Mamdani signed an executive order reaffirming the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/topic\/sanctuary-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sanctuary laws<\/a>, which limits cooperation between local and federal authorities on immigration enforcement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital has reached out to Mamdani&#8217;s office. \u00a0On Friday, Mamdani said ICE should be abolished, calling it &#8220;rogue&#8221; and &#8220;reckless&#8221; as he faced questions about the death of an 83-year-old Air Force veteran who died after allegedly being shoved onto subway tracks by an illegal immigrant earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have made clear to the president, both in our private conversations and our public conversations, about the fact that I believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ICE is a rogue agency<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774714523_156_zohran-mamdani.png\" alt=\"Zohran Mamdani\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Mayor of New York Zohran Mamdani next to Dylan Contreras, a high school student who was recently released from federal custody, speaks during a press conference at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City on March 19, 2026.
