Fort Worth is adding structures, as well as ones now at elevated risk, to a floodplain map along Eastland Creek on the city\u2019s east side.<\/p>\n
In City Council District 11, Fort Worth will add 102 structures to the revised floodplain map, according to Morgan Walloch, study manager for this project, at a March 23 public meeting. Eleven additional structures will show a higher risk, while two structures will have a reduced risk. Another 12 structures will be removed from the floodplain mapping.<\/p>\n
In City Council District 5, Walloch said the city will not add any structures to the revised map. But three structures will be shown with higher risk and one with lower risk. Three structures will no longer be within the floodplain, Walloch said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe flood risk is changing because the area has grown since the first maps were made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, in 1984,\u201d according to the city in an online FAQ<\/a> about the project. \u201cMore homes, roads and businesses mean more pavement, which causes more rainwater to run off instead of soaking into the ground. Rainfall amounts have also changed. The city is updating maps to show the real risk today.\u201d<\/p>\n The city has finished a study to evaluate flood risk along Eastland Creek and will submit its flood map to FEMA for adoption this fall. The timeline for adoption is estimated at nine months, but depending on public comments and other factors, the process can take a year or longer, the city said. Once the process is complete, impacted homes will be notified by mail.<\/p>\n Eastland Creek Floodplain Mapping Update<\/strong><\/p>\n Documenter name:<\/strong> Patrick Banis<\/p>\n Date<\/strong>: March 23, 2026<\/p>\n To read more about this meeting, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n If FEMA signs off on adding a property to the floodplain, and the property carries a federally backed mortgage, \u201cyour lender will require you to purchase flood insurance,\u201d the city said in the FAQ.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you own your home outright, flood insurance is not required but is strongly recommended.\u201d<\/p>\n With the city\u2019s participation in FEMA\u2019s Community Rating System program, all residents and businesses in Fort Worth can receive a 15% discount on flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program, the FAQ said.<\/p>\n Properties in the floodplain will have to obtain a floodplain development permit<\/a> from the city if they intend to do yard grading, add or replace fences, build new structures, or add to an existing structure. Doing so helps to ensure such changes don\u2019t increase flooding for the community or a property\u2019s neighbors, the city said.<\/p>\n The city\u2019s updated map<\/a> for City Council District 5 follows the creek east of Loop 820. The revised District 11 map tracks the creek upstream going to the west.<\/p>\n City officials held their meeting at A.M. Pate Elementary School. Walloch told residents that the city assists with flood prevention by mowing Eastland Creek three times a year, keeping culverts clear of debris, and completing small erosion mitigation projects.<\/p>\n Walloch also noted the city has flood monitoring equipment along the creek, including a water level monitor adjacent to Pate Elementary.
