AUGUSTINE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 St. Johns County Schools is kicking off the new school year with fresh leadership at the top. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/20\/what-the-new-st-johns-county-superintendent-wants-to-accomplish-in-his-first-100-days\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/05\/20\/what-the-new-st-johns-county-superintendent-wants-to-accomplish-in-his-first-100-days\/\">Dr. Brennan Asplen<\/a> is the district\u2019s new superintendent, stepping in after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/06\/its-been-an-honor-tim-forson-reflects-on-career-as-st-johns-county-superintendent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/03\/06\/its-been-an-honor-tim-forson-reflects-on-career-as-st-johns-county-superintendent\/\">Tim Forson<\/a> retired at the end of June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The school board unanimously approved a three-year contract for Asplen several weeks before he officially began his role July 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">His base salary is $225,000, with potential raises tied to annual performance reviews. The board and superintendent will set goals each year, and Asplen\u2019s performance will be evaluated across eight categories and 37 subcategories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If he meets expectations, his raise will match the percentage increase given to district instructional staff that year. The board can also request an interim evaluation in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Asplen is eligible for additional salary enhancements, including $2,000 annually for maintaining certification requirements and $3,000 for holding a Chief Executive Officer Leadership Certificate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He receives a $900 monthly car allowance, which is separate from his base salary. The district will also reimburse him for any expenses incurred on its behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The contract includes coverage for an annual \u201cexecutive physical,\u201d which should include a stress test, blood work and an EKG.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The board encourages Asplen to join professional groups that support the district\u2019s work, covering up to $1,000 a year in membership fees with board approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Asplen started his new role July 1.
