beat Jannik Sinner in his first ever main draw match at Wimbledon

Sinner made his main draw debut at Wimbledon in 2021 as a 19-year-old, having lost in qualifying the year prior.

Despite it being his first ever appearance at Wimbledon, Sinner was actually the 19th seed after enjoying a breakout season.

This included winning his first two ATP titles, finishing runner-up at the Miami Open, as well as reaching the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, where Sinner would lose to Nadal.

Sinner would be drawn to play Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, who was the world number 48 at the time, in his first ever match at Wimbledon in 2021.

They had played twice before at this point, with the head-to-head set at one win apiece and it was actually Sinner who had won their most recent meeting.

However, on this occasion Fucsovics was able to get the upper hand and beat Sinner, 5-7 6-3 7-5 6-3, to send the promising young talent crashing out of Wimbledon.

While this seemed like somewhat of a surprise at the time, it was just the start of a breakout tournament for Fucsovics.

Fucsovics would go on to beat the likes of Diego Schwartzman and Andrey Rublev to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, before he was eventually beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

What happened to Marton Fucsovics at Wimbledon this year?

Fucsovics has been unable to recreate this sort of success since then, and was the world number 105 coming into Wimbledon this year.

This meant that the now 33-year-old had to play qualifying instead, and he was actually beaten in the final round by Luxembourger Chris Rodesch.

Although this appeared to be the end of the road for Fucsovics’ Wimbledon campaign in 2025, he received a lifeline when Borna Coric withdrew from the tournament.

This enabled Fucsovics to move into the main draw as a lucky loser, and he certainly took advantage of that.

Fucsovics beat Aleksandar Kovacevic and Gael Monfils in back-to-back five set matches to become the first male lucky loser to reach the third round of Wimbledon in the Open Era.

His rollercoaster run would eventually come to an end against Ben Shelton, but he has now climbed back up to world number 89 in the ATP rankings and has a confirmed place in the main draw of the US Open.

Jannik Sinner has showcased
