{"id":693108,"date":"2026-03-30T19:24:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T19:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/693108\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T19:24:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T19:24:14","slug":"sopranos-showrunner-addresses-rumors-james-gandolfini-kept-going-missing-from-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/693108\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Sopranos&#8217; showrunner addresses rumors James Gandolfini kept &#8216;going missing&#8217; from set"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>He said fuggedaboudit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sopranos\u201d showrunner and creator David Chase has confirmed the rumors that James Gandolfini kept \u201cgoing missing\u201d from set while filming the hit crime drama.<\/p>\n<p>Chase addressed the reports and opened up about his working relationship with the late Tony Soprano actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2026\/mar\/27\/sopranos-writer-david-chase-interview-mother-james-gandolfini-mk-ultra-cia-lsd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">during an interview with the Guardian<\/a> published Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, fortunately, I wasn\u2019t the one who dealt with him going missing,\u201d he explained. \u201cThat was Ilene Landress, our line manager. She was the one who found out where he was and did everything that needed to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sopranos\u201d showrunner David Chase confirmed rumors that James Gandolfini (pictured here in 2001) kept \u201cgoing missing\u201d from set while filming the HBO hit. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>However, the 80-year-old Emmy winner also acknowledged that Gandolfini wasn\u2019t always happy filming \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d which aired on HBO for six seasons from 1999 to 2007.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, he asked to meet me a couple of times, once on the banks of the Hudson River when he didn\u2019t want to go to work, and he was so unhappy,\u201d Chase told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cThis happened three or four times, and we talked and talked and talked, but I was never the one who had to find out where he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reports that Gandolfini would go missing from the \u201cSopranos\u201d set first surfaced in James Bailey\u2019s 2025 biography of the late actor, \u201cGandolfini: Jim, Tony and the Life of a Legend.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, fortunately, I wasn\u2019t the one who dealt with him going missing,\u201d Chase said of Gandolfini (pictured here filming \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d in March 2007). I can\u2019t come in to work.\u2019 So we knew then, it\u2019s not just him doing a lot of blow and drinking, and he\u2019s not getting up because he doesn\u2019t want to get up. No, it was deeper than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Abraham, Chase acknowledged that Gandolfini\u2019s issues didn\u2019t have anything to do with the show itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never refused to do anything,\u201d Chase noted. \u201cHe never said, \u2018I\u2019m gonna go wait in my trailer, and when you\u2019re ready to shoot it the way I want it, come get me.\u2019 That never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase (pictured here in London last week) said that Gandolfini\u2019s issues didn\u2019t have to do with \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d itself. WireImage<\/p>\n<p>Gandolfini, who went on to win three Emmys for his performance as Tony Soprano, tragically <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2013\/06\/20\/james-gandolfini-dead-at-51\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died of a heart attack<\/a> in June 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/06\/21\/sopranos-star-james-gandolfini-guzzled-at-least-eight-drinks-during-his-final-meal-source\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">while on vacation in Rome<\/a>. He was 51.<\/p>\n<p>He opened up about \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d and how he felt \u201cinsane\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/sopranosarchive\/2001\/10\/good_fella_still_just_a_regula.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">during a candid chat with NJ.com<\/a> years earlier in 2001, while between Seasons 3 and 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I\u2019m not sane at all when I\u2019m doing the show,\u201d he said during the interview. \u201cI\u2019m completely insane when I\u2019m doing the show. But my family, my friends \u2013 I\u2019ve got some good friends \u2013 they all help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cI got successful at a late age, so I\u2019m under no delusions about what all this is about. Well, I\u2019m sure I have some delusions. But you know, basically it\u2019s a job. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I\u2019m not sane at all when I\u2019m doing the show,\u201d Gandolfini (seen here during Season 3 of \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d) said during a 2001 interview. \u201cI\u2019m completely insane when I\u2019m doing the show.\u201d HBO<\/p>\n<p>Mark Kamine, who worked as a location scout on \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2024\/02\/05\/entertainment\/inside-the-chaotic-last-seasons-of-the-sopranos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained how Gandolfini\u2019s personal demons caused chaos<\/a> during the final seasons of\u00a0the hit HBO show <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2024\/02\/15\/entertainment\/sopranos-star-drea-de-matteo-blasts-james-gandolfini-book\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in his controversial book<\/a>, \u201cOn Locations: Lessons Learned from My Life On Set with The Sopranos and in the Film Industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am at the hotel bar when the crew member closest to Jim asks if I want to go down to Atlantic City with Jim and a few others. It\u2019s over an hour away.
