Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n 1955:<\/strong> A Braniff Airways twin-engine Convair 340 trying to land at Midway Airport in the fog struck a gas station sign<\/a> just beyond the airport and crashed, killing 22 people and injuring 21. This was one of several accidents that prompted the city and federal government to restrict obstructions and the height of buildings near airports.<\/p>\n 1966:<\/strong> Chicago Cubs left fielder and Hall of Famer Billy Williams<\/a> hit for the cycle.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Chicago Cubs who have hit for the cycle<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n In the second game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals in St. Louis: \u201cThe sweet swinger from Mobile way\u00a0achieved the dream<\/a>\u00a0of everyone who ever toted a bat to the plate,\u201d Tribune reporter Edward Prell wrote.<\/p>\n Williams<\/a>\u00a0hit a single, double, triple and a homer \u2014 precisely in that order \u2014 in the Cubs\u2019 7-2 win.<\/p>\n 1970:<\/strong> Two Chicago police officers walking in Seward Park \u2014 Sgt. James Severin and Patrolman Anthony Rizzato \u2014 were shot and killed by snipers<\/a> firing high-powered rifles from a Cabrini-Green high-rise.<\/p>\n Within minutes, other officers arrived to retrieve their bodies and return gunfire. Later, Johnny Veal and George Knights were convicted in the shooting deaths. Both were serving 100- to 199-year sentences<\/a>. Veal was granted parole<\/a> by the Illinois Prisoner Review Board in 2021.<\/p>\n 1974:<\/strong> Illinois issued the first state lottery license to a Chicago coffee shop. Although\u00a0other<\/a>\u00a0agent licenses had already been\u00a0distributed<\/a>, the establishment at 1419 W. Taylor St. was chosen to stage a ceremonial \u201cgrand opening\u201d of the Illinois Lottery.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Illinois Lottery\u2019s first drawing took place 50 years ago<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Al and Theresa Prisco were interviewed as lottery officials taped posters to the coffee shop walls urging customers to use their coffee change to buy lottery tickets. A $1.5 million<\/a>\u00a0advertising campaign \u2014 including a\u00a0supplement section<\/a>\u00a0published in the Tribune that taught readers how to play the games \u2014 followed.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been here 25 years,\u201d Al Prisco told the Tribune. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to celebrate it with a bang like this.\u201d<\/p>\n 1980:<\/strong>\u00a0Chicago Bears founder and owner George Halas signed a new\u00a020-year lease<\/a>\u00a0for the team to play at\u00a0Soldier Field<\/a>.<\/p>\n 1984:<\/strong> \u201cI tell you we need a change! Come November, there will be a change because our time has come!\u201d The Rev. Jesse Jackson<\/a> ended his presidential campaign but promised to throw his support behind the Democratic Party\u2019s candidate while speaking at the party\u2019s convention in San Francisco.<\/p>\n Highlights in the life of Rev.
