(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1955:<\/strong> A Braniff Airways twin-engine Convair 340 trying to land at Midway Airport in the fog <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-22-killed-in-midway-cras\/176776761\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck a gas station sign<\/a> just beyond the airport and crashed, killing 22 people and injuring 21. (John Austad\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1966:<\/strong> Chicago Cubs left fielder and Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/14\/billy-williams-wants-to-be-a-resource-for-chicago-cubs-players-and-its-all-thanks-to-buck-oneils-influence-60-years-ago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billy Williams<\/a> hit for the cycle.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"uRVVztmX2G\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/04\/03\/vintage-chicago-tribune-chicago-cubs-mlb-rare-feats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Chicago Cubs who have hit for the cycle<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the second game of a doubleheader against the Cardinals in St. Louis: \u201cThe sweet swinger from Mobile way\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-billy-williams-hits-for\/169414865\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-billy-williams-hits-for\/169414865\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">achieved the dream<\/a>\u00a0of everyone who ever toted a bat to the plate,\u201d Tribune reporter Edward Prell wrote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/williams-billy\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/williams-billy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Williams<\/a>\u00a0hit a single, double, triple and a homer \u2014 precisely in that order \u2014 in the Cubs\u2019 7-2 win.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago police Sgt. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970:<\/strong> Two Chicago police officers walking in Seward Park \u2014 Sgt. James Severin and Patrolman Anthony Rizzato \u2014 were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-snipers-slay-2-policemen\/176777220\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shot and killed by snipers<\/a> firing high-powered rifles from a Cabrini-Green high-rise.<\/p>\n<p>Within minutes, other officers arrived to retrieve their bodies and return gunfire. Later, Johnny Veal and George Knights were convicted in the shooting deaths. Both were serving <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-man-convicted-of-killing\/162721400\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100- to 199-year sentences<\/a>. Veal was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/politics\/2021\/2\/25\/22301264\/cop-killers-freed-parole-johnny-veal-joseph-hurst-james-severin-anthony-rizzato-herman-stallworth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">granted parole<\/a> by the Illinois Prisoner Review Board in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A coffee shop on Taylor Street owned by Al and Theresa Prisco was the first business licensed to sell Illinois Lottery tickets on July 17, 1974. Although\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383899867\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22illinois%20lottery%22\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383899867\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22illinois%20lottery%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other<\/a>\u00a0agent licenses had already been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383901722\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22illinois%20lottery%22\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383901722\/?match=1&amp;terms=%22illinois%20lottery%22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">distributed<\/a>, the establishment at 1419 W. Taylor St. was chosen to stage a ceremonial \u201cgrand opening\u201d of the Illinois Lottery.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"SjmyuEKgIj\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/08\/08\/illinois-lottery-50-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Illinois Lottery\u2019s first drawing took place 50 years ago<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Al and Theresa Prisco were interviewed as lottery officials taped posters to the coffee shop walls urging customers to use their coffee change to buy lottery tickets.
