Even though the majority of Texas school districts have opted out of a state law allowing them to set up voluntary prayer periods during the school day, Boerne ISD is all in. <\/p>\n

The school board of the north-of-San Antonio suburb passed a resolution late last month along a 6-1 vote to designate a class period for voluntary prayer and religious reading for students and employees, My SA reports<\/a>. The district is reportedly awaiting guidance from the state before implementing the plan.<\/p>\n

Notably, Boerne ISD hasn\u2019t announced the change via recent press releases<\/a> or on its social media accounts.<\/p>\n

After Gov. Greg Abbott last year signed Senate Bill 11<\/a>, which allows schools to implement a designated prayer period, only 15 districts statewide have opted in, the Associated Press reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

SB 11 was among a slate of GOP-bills in the previous legislative session meant to promote a conservative brand of Christianity and test the legal limits of separation of church and state. <\/p>\n

One of the others required public schools to prominently display the Ten Commandments in every classroom. However, a federal judge has temporarily blocked<\/a> its enforcement in certain districts due to ongoing legal challenges<\/a> from San Antonio families and the ACLU.<\/p>\n

Other bills approved last session allow unlicensed chaplains to offer\u00a0counseling services<\/a>\u00a0to students and also approved an optional\u00a0Bible-infused curriculum<\/a> to schools throughout the state.<\/p>\n
