Brad Keselowski\u2019s gamble at Pocono Raceway<\/a> ended in heartbreak, but it was the way he handled the fallout that left a lasting impression \u2014 not just with fans, but with fellow drivers like Carl Edwards<\/a>, who recently predicted the NASCAR champion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With just over 30 laps remaining in the Great American Getaway 400<\/a>, Keselowski, who recently made an honest NASCAR admission<\/a>, found himself in clean air and on a strategic path that could have vaulted him into serious contention. His crew chief, Jeremy Bullins, called him to pit road at the expected time, but Keselowski had other ideas. Over the radio, he told Bullins, \u201cAre you sure? I can go longer, Jeremy,\u201d opting to stretch his stint in hopes of gaining track position and maximizing tire advantage late.<\/p>\n

It was a decision driven by a racer\u2019s instinct. Unfortunately, it backfired in the worst way possible. Just one lap later, Shane van Gisbergen<\/a> spun out, bringing out a caution flag that destroyed Keselowski\u2019s strategy. As other drivers pitted under green, Keselowski was forced to dive in under yellow, losing precious time and track position.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, man. I\u2019m sorry. Every time. Just got clean air. UGH!\u201d Keselowski said over the radio after realizing how the caution had upended his plan. The frustration was raw. After running as high as the top five, he found himself back in 18th with less than 30 laps to go.<\/p>\n

The dramatic turn of events could have rattled any driver, but Carl Edwards, watching closely from the broadcast booth, came away deeply impressed with how Keselowski handled the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo things about Brad,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cWhen he made that first mistake coming down pit road, I was shocked by the level of maturity and leadership when he said, \u2018Hey, that\u2019s fine, we\u2019re going to recover from this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Edwards was referring to an earlier misstep Keselowski made when he slightly overshot pit road, costing himself valuable time. Even then, Keselowski maintained composure and confidence that his team could bounce back. It\u2019s what Edwards saw next that really defined Keselowski in his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then they had that happen again where he advocated, \u2018I\u2019m going to stay out again,\u2019 then the caution fell,\u201d Edwards continued. \u201cBut Brad was trying to win that race. He wanted the fresh tires. He took a chance, and he lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the result wasn\u2019t what Keselowski had hoped for, Edwards believes the mindset behind the move is exactly what separates champions from the rest. \u201cThat\u2019s why Brad Keselowski\u2019s a champion,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cBecause he\u2019s not afraid to take those swings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keselowski ultimately crossed the line in ninth place, a bitter finish after a race that at times looked like it could tilt in his favor.
