Now, more than half a century later, NASA may be about to fulfill Cernan&#8217;s wishes. <\/p>\n<p>Watch the launch live stream, set to start at 12:50 p.m. Eastern time, here.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>As early as Wednesday at 6:24 p.m., an Orion capsule seated atop a 322-foot rocket will blast off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It follows the uncrewed Artemis I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/11\/16\/1137046007\/nasa-artemis-moon-rocket-launch-success\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">test flight in 2022<\/a>, which sent an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/08\/27\/1119817113\/artemis-1-launch-what-is-on-board-snoopy-manikins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">empty Orion capsule<\/a> on a three-week ride around the moon before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/09\/27\/nx-s1-5100867\/nasa-moon-space-artemis-2-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Artemis II astronauts<\/a> will first orbit Earth to check out key systems on the spacecraft, and then trace a figure-eight path around our lunar neighbor and back. None have been back since\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a>         <\/p>\n<p>This mission is a crucial step toward NASA&#8217;s goal of once again setting foot on lunar soil, and eventually establishing a permanent lunar presence \u2014 including a moon base \u2014 with the help of international partners.<\/p>\n<p>At a press briefing on Tuesday, Mark Burger, launch weather officer with the Space Force&#8217;s 45th Weather Squadron, said there was an <a href=\"https:\/\/45thweathersquadron.nebula.spaceforce.mil\/pages\/launchForecastSupport.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">80% chance<\/a> of favorable conditions for launch day, though they were keeping a close eye on the weather.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Spaulding, senior NASA test director, is a veteran of many launches.
