{"id":699421,"date":"2026-04-02T10:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/699421\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T10:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:43:14","slug":"five-mayors-and-a-museum-an-old-town-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/699421\/","title":{"rendered":"Five mayors and a museum: An Old Town Story |"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">After nearly three years of anticipation, a major expansion in Old Town was unveiled last week.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the fall of 2023, Valley automobile mogul Louis \u201cBuzz\u201d Sands made a $12 million donation to expand Western Spirit: Scottsdale\u2019s Museum of the West.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On March 24, Mayor Lisa Borowsky was joined by four former mayors in celebrating the opening of the Louis Sands IV Center.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is a two-story, $12 million expansion Western Spirit: Scottsdale\u2019s Museum of the West.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At the event, Borowsky was joined by former Scottsdale Mayors David Ortega, Jim Lane, Mary Manross and Sam Campana. \u201cThe Five Mayors\u201d pulled back the curtain on a space that will house four new exhibits.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWestern Spirit Museum is a coveted Scottsdale gem, a landmark and a point of pride for the \u2018West\u2019s Most Western Town\u2019,\u201d Borowsky said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe grand opening of the Louis Sands IV Center marks a transformative new chapter for Western Spirit Museum and a defining moment for Scottsdale,\u201d added Todd Bankofier, executive director of the Old Town attraction.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said the \u201cmust-see destination\u201d was \u201cdesigned to inspire pride in our community, spark curiosity, and deliver a powerful, immersive cultural experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Louis Sands IV Center showcases Western American and American Indian art, painting, sculpture, jewelry and ceramics.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The event started a\u00a0 weeklong celebration dubbed \u201cUnmistakably West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After private events, the Sands Center opened to the public March 28, with a celebration featuring music and food.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Free admission to the museum continues from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, March 29.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For free passes, registration is required at <a href=\"http:\/\/westernspirit.org\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">westernspirit.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe Louis Sands IV Center allows us to tell the story of the West in a new, more expansive way, placing painting, sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics into conversation across two floors,\u201d said Andrew Patrick Nelson, the museum\u2019s chief curator.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0Together, these exhibitions reflect the richness and continuing vitality of Western and Indigenous art, setting the state for how our museum will move forward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The main gallery level of the new space hosts three interconnected exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cVisions in Bronze\u201d explores more than a century of sculptures \u2013 from the classical inspirations of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, through a midcentury revival led by Arizona artists, to contemporary responses by American Indian and women.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFrom Earth to the Stars\u201d traces the evolution of American Indian jewelry, from early silverwork to bold contemporary designs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFire of Ages\u201d explores over six centuries of American Indian ceramic traditions, showcasing how Hopi and southwestern potters have shaped clay and fire.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The upper level of Sands Center features the fruit of another stunning donation: \u201cWorking Pardners: Masterworks from the Eddie Basha Collection, the inaugural public presentation of one of the most significant collections of Western American and American Indian art assembled.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Drawn entirely from the Eddie Basha Collection, the exhibitions present paintings, sculpture, and works on paper that reflect the late supermarket magnate\u2019s lifelong commitment to arts, artists, to the West, and to the relationships that sustain creative communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After nearly three years of anticipation, a major expansion in Old Town was unveiled last week.
