{"id":700700,"date":"2026-04-02T23:42:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T23:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/700700\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T23:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T23:42:15","slug":"we-are-in-an-urgent-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/700700\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We are in an urgent moment&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, the Erie County medical examiner ruled the death of Nurul\u00a0Amin Shah\u00a0Alam\u00a0a homicide.\u00a0The blind, Burmese refugee was left, by Border Patrol agents, outside a closed coffee shop on a cold February night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ruling comes amid building pressure on Gov. Kathy Hochul to agree to a package of new protections for immigrants that would do more than ban official agreements between local law enforcement and ICE.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The package is being referred to as the \u201cNew York For All Act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s own immigrant protection bills, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/keeping-new-yorkers-safe-governor-hochul-introduces-local-cops-local-crimes-act-stop-ice-co\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called \u201cLocal Cops, Local Crimes,\u201d<\/a> prevents local law enforcement from working formally with ICE, but doesn\u2019t prevent informal collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGov. Hochul\u2019s bill that would prohibit formal collusion is a great first step,\u201d Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York immigration Coalition, told Capital Tonight. \u201cBut where we are seeing the vast majority of harm being committed is in the informal instances, like Mr. Shah Alam, as well as other people.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/nys-capital-tonight-time-graphic-promo960x540jpgjpg.jpeg\" class=\"hashed-image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-fifty\" alt=\"\" img-data-wrap-text=\"false\" img-data-editing=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Awawdeh recalled an instance in which a victim of domestic violence called 911 and local police turned her over to ICE.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s moments like that, Mr. Alam\u2019s case, the Greene County domestic violence case and so many more cases where we are seeing local police colluding, unofficially, with immigration officials to harm New Yorkers,\u201d Awawdeh said.<\/p>\n<p>Awawdeh told Capital Tonight it doesn\u2019t matter to him whether the package of immigration bills passes within the budget or on its own, just that it passes soon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in an urgent moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to Capital Tonight, the governor\u2019s spokesperson sent the following comment:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Governor shares this sense of urgency, which is why she proposed these bills in January and has been clear that she would be willing to sign them into law immediately.
