{"id":7011,"date":"2025-06-23T03:45:55","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T03:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/7011\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T03:45:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T03:45:55","slug":"bny-reportedly-pitched-merger-to-northern-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/7011\/","title":{"rendered":"BNY Reportedly Pitched Merger to Northern Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The deal would mark a milestone for financial services, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/banking\/bank-of-new-york-mellon-approached-northern-trust-to-discuss-potential-merger-7017f4eb?mod=hp_lead_pos6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a> Sunday (June 20), combining two of the biggest asset-servicing businesses and establishing an investment-management goliath overseeing upwards of $3 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Sources told WSJ the CEOs of both financial institutions have had at least one conversation without discussing a specific offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sources added that BNY is weighing its next move, which could include returning to Northern Trust with a formal offer, but stressed that it\u2019s possible the talks won\u2019t lead to a deal. PYMNTS has contacted Northern Trust for comment but has not yet gotten a reply. A spokesperson for BNY declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>WSJ noted that any deal \u201cwould be huge,\u201d as Northern Trust, based in Chicago, has a market value of more than $21 billion, with its share price climbing 9% this year.<\/p>\n<p>The report also pointed out that the Trump administration has indicated more openness to greenlighting <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/partnerships-acquisitions\/2025\/tariff-worries-plunge-mergers-acquisitions-lowest-level-20-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">major bank mergers<\/a>, which have been rare in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.<\/a> (FDIC) in March announced its intent to roll back a policy that had increased oversight into large bank mergers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The regulator\u2019s proposal <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/bank-regulation\/2025\/fdic-wants-to-lessen-scrutiny-into-banking-mega-mergers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">would rescind<\/a> the group\u2019s 2024 Statement of Policy on Bank Merger Transactions, replacing it \u2014 for the moment \u2014 with an earlier merger rule amid a larger look into the merger review process.<\/p>\n<p>Under the past rule, mergers that would lead to financial institutions with assets of at $100 billion or more would be subject to \u201cheightened financial stability analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As covered here last month, bankers have been <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/bank-regulation\/2025\/at-hill-hearing-bankers-say-regulation-hinders-mergers-and-de-novo-formation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lobbying Congress<\/a> to relax the regulations involved in merging or opening banks.<\/p>\n<p>ReShonda Young, founder of the Iowa-based <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bankofjabez.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bank of Jabez<\/a>, testified before a House subcommittee that in meetings with banking consultants and regulators, a pre-opening checklist involved 74 items.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPair that with average pre-opening expenses of $800,000 to $1.5 million and post-charter capital needs of at least $20 million, and most people would abort the mission,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In other banking news, PYMNTS wrote last week about recent research into banks\u2019 use of <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/real-time-payments\/2025\/whos-winning-the-instant-payments-race-depends-on-the-customer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">real-time payments<\/a>. Among banks that exclusively offer real-time payments to business customers, 28% point to enhanced payment tracking as a key advantage.
