<\/p>\nA man has died following a motorcycle crash in southern NSW that has closed a key highway for holiday commuters.<\/p>\n
NSW Police say it is the first road death in NSW they have been notified of this Easter long weekend.<\/p>\n
The Monaro Highway was closed in both directions for hours on Friday afternoon, resulting in detours that could add five hours onto some motorists’ travels.<\/p>\n
NSW Police say the male rider was travelling with a group of other motorcyclists around 1:20pm when he crashed onto the road at Rock Flat, 20 kilometres south of Cooma.<\/p>\n
The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, died before emergency services arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n
Authorities believe no other vehicles or objects were involved and have asked for anyone with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward.<\/p>\n
Highway closed<\/p>\n
The Monaro Highway was closed by authorities in both directions between Nimmitabel and Tom Groggin Road.<\/p>\n
Motorists were advised to avoid the area, which is a key route for people travelling between the ACT and the NSW far south coast, notably during school holiday periods.<\/p>\n
In a statement, a NSW Police spokesperson said specialists established a crime scene at the highway.<\/p>\n

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area as the scene is expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time,” police said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Motorists were able to divert through the Kings Highway, Princes Highway and Snowy Mountains Highway, with authorities advising the detour would add an additional five hours’ travel time.<\/p>\n
