Your grandma\u2019s home<\/a> may feel like a snapshot of another era, filled with fragile knickknacks, well-worn furniture, and sentimental mementos. Yet tucked among those everyday living room pieces could be vintage items that are now surprisingly valuable.<\/p>\n

From midcentury modern furnishings to beautifully detailed Flow Blue china, many of these pieces are highly sought after by antique dealers, interior designers, and collectors. Even less obvious finds\u2014such as ornate brass doorstops, ceramic figurines, or vintage light fixtures\u2014can command high prices when they\u2019re well preserved and come with an appealing history. The most exciting part? These hidden gems are often hiding in plain sight.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver half the items in my home probably came from someone\u2019s grandparents\u2019 home,\u201d says Francesca Grace, a Los Angeles designer and stager at Francesca Grace Home<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m constantly scouring Facebook Marketplace<\/a> for treasures that someone doesn\u2019t know they have.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve compiled a list of 21 living room staples that vintage enthusiasts are especially eager to find right now. Whether you\u2019re clearing out a grandparent\u2019s house, browsing estate sales, or just wondering about the potential value of family heirlooms, this guide can help ensure you don\u2019t unknowingly part with something valuable at your next yard sale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Books<\/p>\n

Scan the shelves. \u201cCheck the opening pages for the book\u2019s edition,\u201d Alex Mutter-Rottmayer at Hommeboys Interiors<\/a> in Sonoma, California, says. \u201cWho printed it? Rare books can be some of the most valuable finds that are often overlooked. Some of the most rare books have sold at auction for multiple millions of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson, North Carolina, interior designer Grey Joyner<\/a> recommends looking for first and early editions. For instance, first-edition books by Ernest Hemingway are currently going for anywhere between $2,000 and $200,000, she says. If you suspect you may have inherited a collectible, it\u2019s worth taking it to a local dealer to assess.<\/p>\n

Vinyl Records<\/p>\n

Collecting records can be more than a nostalgic pastime. Check to see if you have any limited edition or first pressings. \u201cYou may have a rare pressing of a Beatles record and not even know it,\u201d Mutter-Rottmayer says. \u201cArtists unknown to you are also worth exploring, with some lesser-known or smaller pressings selling for tens of thousands of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quilts\"quilt<\/p>\n

Quilts have become increasingly collectible. \u201cIdeally, you’re looking for intricate patchwork or checker patterns, as checkers are very popular in home decor right now,\u201d says Thea Bloch-Neal, founder and lead designer of Curated by Thea<\/a> in Durham, North Carolina. \u201cOpt for bright colors\u2014nothing muted. Seek out quilts in good condition, without excessive wear or holes, and aim for at least a queen size.\u201d Once you find a quilt that\u2019s a keeper, give it a good dry cleaning to get rid of the \u201cold house\u201d smell.<\/p>\n

Antique quilts, even common patterns, can sell between $340 and $2,500. \u201cCondition is important, but not always,\u201d Mutter-Rottmayer adds. \u201cOne of the most expensive quilts sold went for $264,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Old Armoires and Curio Cabinets<\/p>\n

Take a closer look at cabinets and storage furniture. \u201cAntique armoires, particularly those made from solid wood and featuring intricate carvings or hand-painted designs, are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers,\u201d Grace says. \u201cDepending on the age, craftsmanship, and condition, a vintage armoire can be valued at $500 to $5,000 or more. I recently scored one on Facebook Marketplace for $1,800 that I\u2019m told is likely from the 1890s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stained Glass Lamps and Light Fixtures<\/p>\n

That stained glass reading lamp or pendant could be worth a small fortune, especially if it\u2019s genuine Tiffany or made in the Tiffany style\u2014from $5,000 to over $1 million, depending on the design and condition. \u201cEven non-Tiffany-branded but well-crafted replicas or similar lamps from the era can fetch several hundred to several thousand dollars,\u201d Grace explains.<\/p>\n

Oil Paintings<\/p>\n

\u201cLandscape or equestrian original oil paintings that have been in your grandmother\u2019s living room since you were a kid can sell today for a lot of money,\u201d Houston-based Kyle Dutton of Kyle Dutton Homes<\/a> says. \u201cFor example, a family in Texas was recently about to donate a small landscape painting to Goodwill when they decided at the last minute to have it appraised. Little did they know that the old oil painting that was gifted to their grandmother and hung in her living room for so many years was an original by Julian Onderdonk. It sold shortly after for over $100,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly Waters, principal of Studio Waters<\/a> in San Francisco and Napa, has a similar story. Her grandmother befriended an art dealer from Germany who gave her a painting of a rural scene with cows. Years later, she had it appraised for thousands of dollars. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t look like anything special to a modern eye, but the colors are incredible,\u201d Waters says. \u201cIt would be a great piece for a space that is expertly layering items from many different eras.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 1950s and 1960s, many people appreciated handmade furniture and may have pieces by craftsmen such as Wharton Esherick, George Nakashima, and Isamu Noguchi. \u201cI would hope Grandma lives in the Philadelphia area, and she bought a pair of Wharton Esherick captain chairs<\/a> sometime between 1950 and 1959,\u201d says Robert Ogden, principal designer at RTO Lighting <\/a>and co-owner of Lostine<\/a>. \u201cSomeone could easily walk past a pair of these chairs and not realize they could be worth $60,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

A grandparent pinching pennies could afford a small George Nakashima stool<\/a> that now sells for $6,000. If you\u2019re lucky, Grandma bought a Nakashima wall cabinet<\/a> that today sells for $138,500.<\/p>\n

Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn, principal designers at Los Angeles\u2013based House of Rolison<\/a>, recommend looking for midcentury modern furniture pieces such as low-slung sofas, sleek coffee tables, and iconic armchairs with clean lines. \u201cPay attention to the wood quality\u2014teak and walnut are especially desirable,\u201d Leigh says.<\/p>\n

Pianos<\/p>\n

A piano isn\u2019t a rarity, yet specific brands such as Steinway & Sons, Mason & Hamlin, and Baldwin are particularly sought after, Grace points out. A well-preserved upright or grand piano can range in value from $1,000 to $20,000 or more, with rare models or those in exceptional condition fetching higher prices.<\/p>\n

Ceramics<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople will pay good money for authentic ceramics and stoneware,\u201d Bloch-Neal says. \u201cJugs are a great place to start: People love these items, and knockoffs just don\u2019t do it.\u201d They sell for $100 to $1,000.<\/p>\n

Anthony Barzilay-Freund, 1stDibs\u2019 editorial and fine art director, points to a tableware collaboration between Tiffany and Elsa Peretti<\/a> that produced several collections in the 1960s. One of those jugs is now selling for $2,000.<\/p>\n

Waters says to look for signatures on ceramic pieces. \u201cMy very stylish mother-in-law had incredible taste and just happened to pick up ceramics at the local garden center in Pasadena,\u201d she says. \u201cTurns out that a little garden stool<\/a> was by theStan Bitters<\/a>, which we discovered on a tour of Sam Malouf\u2019s home with the same stools littered amongst his garden.\u201d<\/p>\n

Persian Rugs\"stack<\/p>\n

The hand-knotted Persian rug that\u2019s been in the family for generations might just be a valuable antique. \u201cAuthentic Persian rugs, particularly those from renowned regions, can be worth several thousand dollars, depending on their size, age, and condition,\u201d Grace says. \u201cEven smaller, well-preserved rugs can fetch $1,000 to $5,000.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pay special attention to their hand-craftsmanship and colorways. \u201cRugs featuring deep reds, royal blues, and golds command higher value due to the rarity and complexity of achieving such vibrant, enduring colors,\u201d Leigh adds.<\/p>\n

Tortoiseshell Boxes<\/p>\n

Tortoiseshell boxes are worth a lot, says Sheldon Harte, principal of Harte Brownlee & Associates<\/a> in Irvine, California, who scoured estate sales with his grandma in Pasadena. He once bought a tortoiseshell tea caddy<\/a> for $20 or $30 that\u2019s now worth $2,800.<\/p>\n

Folk Art<\/p>\n

The folk art umbrella covers design objects beyond the decorative. \u201cPieces that fall under Tramp art<\/a> are increasingly coveted with more unique and intricate carved wood pieces selling for thousands,\u201d Mutter-Rottmayer says. \u201cOften with these pieces, the value is in the eye of the beholder, and some pieces may sell for more simply because of their beauty and unique design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opaline Vases<\/p>\n

Much like opaline glasses<\/a> found in your grandma\u2019s kitchen, this style of glass (popular in the Georgian era) can be spotted in the living room space. \u201cMost of the opaline glass you\u2019ll find at the average grandparent\u2019s house is from the mid-20th century, which can still be quite valuable,\u201d Joyner says. \u201cHowever, if you get lucky and find some 19th-century opaline glass vases, buy them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brass, Iron, and Other Vintage Hardware\"close<\/p>\n

Solid brass is not to be overlooked\u2014check hardware, fireplace sets, and trivets. Real, solid brass holds its value. \u201cFull brass fireplace sets, even from as recent as the 1970s, can go for $500 or more,\u201d Joyner says.<\/p>\n

Likewise, cast iron door stops<\/a> from the 1930s, or \u201cwhimsical pieces of Americana\u201d as Dutton puts it, can add color and character to any room. And if that\u2019s not your style, they sell for around $1,250 on 1stDibs.<\/p>\n

Posters<\/p>\n

Old posters from museum exhibitions are pieces of history. \u201cLook for pieces from exhibits featuring artists like Matisse and Ansel Adams,\u201d Bloch-Neal says. \u201cPosters that are lithographs are especially valuable as they hold color better and tend to be more collectible. Bonus if the colors are still bright.\u201d Ensure they include details about where and when the exhibition took place, as well as what it was called\u2014and confirm they\u2019re not reproductions. The estimated value of vintage posters is between $500 and $3,500.<\/p>\n

Pre-1990s IKEA Pieces<\/p>\n

IKEA made a name for itself before it was the go-to for furnishing your first place<\/a>. The mass production giant has a past you\u2019ll want to hold on to. \u201cLook for items made before 1995,\u201d Bloch-Neal says. \u201cChairs like the IKEA Cavelli and Singoalla lounge were crafted with solid wood, not MDF, and featured unique fabrics.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding pieces with the original fabric is ideal. Any item that embodies IKEA\u2019s core design values\u2014such as clean lines or multifunctionality\u2014is highly desirable. \u201cVintage IKEA pieces can bring in good money\u2014from $250 to $5,000\u2014wild, I know,\u201d Bloch-Neal adds.<\/p>\n

Murano Glass Vases and Light Fixtures<\/p>\n

Your family\u2019s globetrotting matriarch may have picked up a few Murano glass blown pieces<\/a>, adding both beauty and a cultural panache to her home. \u201cIn the 16th century, Murano glassblowers developed the Aventurine technique, which suspended gold [or other metal] crystals within the glass,\u201d Barzilay-Freund says. These pieces are expensive when bought new and have an exceptional value, upward of $10,000, if you score a vintage piece.<\/p>\n

Peek inside the buffet. Should you spot blue-and-white dishes, examine them closely. Flo Blue<\/a> (or Flow Blue) ceramic plates were an alternative to the imported, hand-painted Chinese porcelain. These transferware pieces, distinguished by their blurred edges, are highly collectible. Harte says his grandmother bought the plates for $10 apiece; now a set of four sells for $595. If you see botanical patterns, pay attention. A couple of pieces from the Danish company Royal Copenhagen\u2019s Flora Danica<\/a> collection could cover the down payment on a car. \u201cThe Flora Danica service is one of the most important produced in the 18th century and remains in production till this day,\u201d Barzilay-Freund says. \u201cIt was designed for the royal tables of Europe and has remained a symbol of wealth and taste since its inception.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silver Objects<\/p>\n

Grandma\u2019s silver may sound like a clich\u00e9, but Art Deco pieces<\/a> can be museum-worthy and sell for more than $5,000 each. See if you can tell the manufacturer. The French heritage brand Christofle, for instance, is known as one of the most iconic metalsmiths of the 19th and 20th centuries, Barzilay-Freund says. Sterling silver containers<\/a> can also fetch a hefty price, as do sculptural objects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Light Sculptures<\/p>\n

Watch out for 1930s revival lighting. \u201cAnything art deco or Spanish revival is key to catch,\u201d Leigh says. Keep an eye out for midcentury designs such as bamboo-and-paper Noguchi floor lamps or pendants as well. \u201cA very popular piece in the 1960s was an Isamu Noguchi Akari light sculpture, like the Model BB2\/20A, which sells for around $20,000,\u201d Ogden adds.<\/p>\n

Mirrors<\/p>\n

Antique mirrors with ornate frames and original glass are gems. Leigh recommends looking for Baroque, Rococo, and Venetian styles with gilded frames, intricate carvings, or historical provenance as they\u2019re particularly valuable. Decorative mirrors<\/a> were also popular in the 1930s and can look stellar in a color-drenched room<\/a>.<\/p>\n
